The DVSA is rolling out mandatory vehicle photographs during MOT tests across the UK as part of its ongoing efforts to improve compliance and tackle fraudulent MOT activity.

πŸ“Έ Testers will be required to capture images of vehicles at the time of testing, helping to verify that tests are being carried out correctly and improving the integrity of the MOT scheme. The change will be introduced in phases before becoming a national requirement.

Now is the time to:
βœ… Understand the new photo requirements
βœ… Ensure your team is prepared
βœ… Check your equipment and processes are ready for the rollout

Keeping up with DVSA changes is essential to remain compliant and avoid unnecessary issues.

πŸš›πŸ’‘ Are your vehicle lighting accessories compliant?

The DVSA has issued important guidance on aftermarket light products, including:

βœ”οΈ Vulnerable Road User (VRU) signs
βœ”οΈ Decorative LED displays and lighting
βœ”οΈ Warning beacons

While these products are often fitted with good intentions to improve safety, incorrect installation or non-compliant lighting could result in enforcement action, advisory notices, MOT failures, fines, or penalty points. Recent concerns include incorrect indicator colours and flash rates, distracting decorative displays, and the illegal use of blue warning beacons on non-emergency vehicles.

If you operate HGVs, vans, buses, or commercial vehicles, now is a good time to review any aftermarket lighting fitted to your fleet and ensure it meets current requirements.

Many drivers fit aftermarket devices to their vehicles, often with the best intentions – particularly when it comes to protecting vulnerable road users like cyclists and pedestrians. But your vehicle must be compliant...

πŸš› The Importance of an LGV Gate Check

A gate check can play a vital role in keeping your operation safe, compliant, and efficient.

Before an LGV leaves the operating centre, a final gate check provides an additional opportunity to identify issues that may have been missed during the driver's daily walkaround inspection.

βœ… Check for obvious vehicle defects

βœ… Ensure lights are working correctly

βœ… Confirm doors, curtains, and tail lifts are secure

βœ… Verify loads are safe and properly restrained

βœ… Check tyres for visible damage or low pressure

βœ… Ensure vehicle documentation and compliance requirements are in place

βœ… Help prevent prohibitions, roadside enforcement action, and costly delays

A robust gate check process demonstrates a proactive approach to road safety and compliance while helping to protect drivers, operators, and other road users.

Remember, preventing a problem before a vehicle enters the road network is always better than dealing with the consequences later.

πŸš› Are you doing enough to protect your fleet, drivers, and business?

Many operators focus on vehicle maintenance and compliance, but one of the most effective risk-management tools is often overlooked: regular driving assessments.

Driving assessments can help fleets:
βœ… Identify risky driving behaviours before they lead to incidents
βœ… Improve fuel efficiency and reduce vehicle wear and tear
βœ… Support compliance and demonstrate proactive driver management
βœ… Highlight training needs and promote a stronger safety culture
βœ… Reduce the likelihood of costly collisions and downtime

Regular assessments provide valuable insight into driver performance and help ensure standards remain high across your operation. Research and industry guidance consistently show that ongoing driver monitoring and assessments can improve safety, compliance, and operational efficiency.
