Our ports are marking Merchant Navy day today which commemorates and celebrates merchant seafarers past and present.

On this day, the Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service is awarded to seafarers who have set an outstanding example to others by their devotion to duty or exemplary service.

We are proud to say that our Group Chief Harbour Master and Group Head of Marine, Captain Alan McPherson is a recipient of the medal this year for services to safety and standards. Congratulations to Alan.

The impressive ship built in 1934 is quite a sight to see on the Tay. We wish success to all the trainees onboard in their future marine careers and hope to see the Georg Stage return to Dundee again in the future.

The inaugural Big Forth Cleanup with our partners Balanced Horizon at the weekend was a huge success. Forth Ports people from across our ports were out in force and joined by community groups and local stakeholders. The enthusiasm shown by everyone taking part created a very positive atmosphere and enjoyable experience for all.

Armed with litter pickers, gloves and bin bags, around a hundred Forth Ports volunteers gave up their time to take part in a number of beach cleans including Leven, Methil, Portobello, Port of Leith, Bo’ness, Kirkcaldy and Crail.

In Grangemouth, volunteers joined in with the G-Litter community group. Also taking part down in the Thames, the team at the Port of Tilbury organised their own cleanup of the foreshore and pathways beside the International Cruise Terminal.

From these cleans alone, around three-quarters of a tonne of waste has been removed from our coastal environments.

Commenting on the weekend our Head of Sustainability Katy Reid said “The aim of the Big Forth Cleanup was simple: to bring people together to care for the places we all value, remove waste from our coastline and waterways, protect wildlife, and inspire long-term community action across the Forth.”

There are too many people to thank individually so please accept a sincere THANK YOU from everyone at Forth Ports for taking part and supporting the Big Forth clean up.

We’re pleased to be working in partnership with again to present the Port of Rosyth Bus Tours as part of this year’s festival, taking place on Sunday, 6th September.

The first tour will depart from Pittencrieff Park at 12pm, taking passengers on a scenic journey through Dunfermline city centre to the Port of Rosyth, where guests will enjoy a rare opportunity to take part in a guided tour of the working port.

All proceeds from ticket sales will be reinvested into the Outwith Festival, directly supporting a range of local community arts and music activities across Dunfermline and the surrounding area.

Forth Ports team up with environmental charity Balanced Horizon to deliver largest ever clean of the Firth of Forth 28-30 August. 🌊

The Big Forth Cleanup will be a large-scale, community driven weekend of beach cleaning and juvenile lobster releases organised by Balanced Horizon in collaboration with Forth Ports. The goal of the event is to clean as much of the coastline of the Firth of Forth over the course of the 28-30th August 2026, and is open to everybody of all ages. 🙌

Katy Reid, Group Head of Sustainability at Forth Ports said: “It’s great to be partnering with Balanced Horizon for our first Big Forth Cleanup, which will be a landmark event all around the Firth of Forth with coastal clean up and juvenile lobster release events taking place from 28 – 30 August. This coastline is central to Forth Ports’

Scottish operations and plays a vital role in supporting the economy, local communities and the rich diversity of wildlife found both on land and at sea. Bringing people together to take action at scale will make a meaningful difference in caring for and preserving the coastline and local environment. From Marine Operative to Chief Operating Officer: There Really Is No Wrong Path.

Exam results day can bring excitement, uncertainty and lots of questions about what comes next. That's why Forth Ports is supporting this week (3-7 August 2026). Led by Developing the Young Workforce (DYW), the campaign shines a spotlight on real career journeys, showing young people that success comes in many forms and that there are countless ways to build a rewarding future.

Paul Dale, Chief Operating Officer said:

When I left school at 16, I didn't have a clear career plan mapped out. Like many people, I wasn't entirely sure where my future would take me, and I certainly didn't imagine that one day I would become Chief Operating Officer of one of the UK's leading port businesses.

I joined Forth Ports as a Marine Operative and learned quickly that careers are rarely a straight line. Over the last 20+ years, I've had the opportunity to work across different parts of the business, taking on new challenges, developing new skills and building experience in both operational and support function roles. Every step taught me something valuable and helped prepare me for the next opportunity.

Alongside my role at Forth Ports, I'm also Chair of Tilbury on the Thames Trust and a Trustee of Thurrock’s new OnSide Youth Zone Thames Gateway, a state-of-the-art youth centre due to open in Tilbury in 2027. Through that work, I see first-hand the importance of helping young people realise that success looks different for everyone and that there are many routes to achieving your goals.
