In the last year there have been numerous incidents of people getting cut off by the sea at the base of cliffs. This put them at risk of drowning, cold-water shock and chalk falling from cliffs above. They all had to be rescued by the coastguard.

Eastbourne RNLI would like to recognise the outstanding efforts of our volunteer crew over the past week.

Following three further callouts yesterday, the crew have now been tasked 12 times in just five days. These launches have taken place at all hours, in varying conditions, and have required a full team effort both on the water and behind the scenes. Due to the sensitive nature of recent incidents, we are unable to provide further details.

This period has also marked the first operational week for our new Launch Authority, Alan Wood, who has taken on the responsibility of authorising launches and supporting the crew during what has been an exceptionally busy start to the role.

We have also worked closely alongside HM Coastguard teams from Eastbourne, Birling Gap and Newhaven, as well as the Coastguard helicopter, highlighting the strong multi-agency response required across these incidents.

Despite the pace and demands of recent days, our volunteers have continued to respond with professionalism, resilience, and dedication, reflecting the high standards expected at the station.

The crew remain on call 24/7 and ready to respond whenever needed.

We extend our sincere thanks to every member of the team for their continued commitment and service to the community.

If you're walking on the clifftop, you can't see cracks and overhangs beneath you. Chalk is very unstable and can crumble without warning.
It will take anyone standing on the edge down with it.
