A trip to Leeds today to collect the lovely May. Once loaded she settled in and travelled beautifully, seeming to enjoy the ride North as she looked out the window. She arrived at her new home relaxed, happy, and ready to start her next chapter.

A fabulous dressage day today at West Park Arena for Sophie and Dan. This was their first dressage competition and despite the wind absolutely howling and many distractions, they came away with a fabulous fifth place. Well done!

We had just left base and headed home for a very late lunch when we received a call from Equine Rescue Services to collect a horse from a broken down lorry on the A1231. After a quick change of clothes we headed out again and were on our way. A call to the customer to let them know that we would be there shortly was received by a very distraught owner as the horse was in a very panicked state, rearing in the box, threatening to go over the bars and slicing his legs in the process. Upon arrival, the first point of order was to calm the owner and reassure them. It was at this point that we discovered that it had taken them four hours to get Lenny on the wagon to go home after an event this afternoon - not quite the words that you want to hear when doing a roadside transfer. As he was in an agitated state, the decision was made to have a vet attend and sedate him for his own safety before an attempt was made to transfer him. We then liaised with the officers from Northumbria Police, who had closed the road, and explained the transfer process. What a fabulous crew to work alongside! Once the lovely vet from Oaklands Equine Hospital arrived and provided sedation it was smooth sailing from there. Lenny was unloaded from his wagon and, with a little teamwork, was loaded-up and on his way home. It is safe to say that Lenny had very relieved owner once he was finally home, after what turned out to be a very long day.

You may be thinking another day, another yard move, another thoroughbred, but Kesra is not just any TB…she is built like a warmblood and is absolutely stunning! We fully understand why her owner says that when she saw her for the first time she just had to have her! She was a little sticky loading to start but once on board travelled beautifully. Her new yard has amazing facilities and we are sure that she will enjoy the miles and miles of hacking on her doorstep.

Yesterday we had a yard move for Luna, another lovely thoroughbred. Very little was known about Luna as her owner has only had her for two weeks and she had been a bit unsettled since arriving. To be fair - the cooler temperatures and unpredictable rain showers did not help matters either. We quickly discovered that Luna is not a confident traveller so it was a case of travelling in a much lower gear (the higher engine revs often have a calming effect) and ensuring that the drive was as smooth as possible without any delays. When we arrived at her new yard, she did have a moment of panic when the engine stopped but soon calmed down once the doors were opened and the ramp dropped. An absolutely lovely mare who would benefit from some short round trip journeys to get her used to travelling.

A trip down to Mirfield this morning to collect the absolutely stunning Gio - a beautifully level headed three year old that only just arrived from Ireland five weeks ago. He walked confidently up the ramp and into the horsebox and then travelled like a dream up to his new home in County Durham. What a fabulous boy!

What a fabulous morning at British Dressage Team Quest at Holmside Hall Equestrian - Livery, Competitions & Coaching. It becomes very evident how small the world really is when your passenger’s owner is someone who you first met through a mutual friend 33 years ago! Harvey was the model passenger and walked straight up the ramp and was comfortable enough to doze off on the journey. He is such a lovely boy!He had the best score in his section, the highest team score, and the team won!

A HUGE well done to everyone!!’

π‡πŽπ– π‡πŽπ“ πˆπ’ π“πŽπŽ π‡πŽπ“?

This morning we decided to conduct a little experiment... we did this last summer and the summer before, but it is always a good reminder - especially at this time of year.

At 10am there was an outside temperature of 21Β°C, there was a good breeze and the horsebox was parked in a shaded area. As the horsebox needed cleaning after last night's use, we decided, out of interest, to check the internal temperature to see what the variance was. Whilst the vent had been open, the windows had been closed. Can you guess what the internal temperature was? Answer in the comments.

Now, the ideal temperature for a horsebox is between 10Β°C to 24Β°C. Because enclosed vehicles, such as horseboxes, heat up rapidly due to the body heat of the horses, maintaining a comfortable environment, and monitoring those conditions closely is critical for your horse's respiratory health and aids in preventing heat stress. This is why it is crucial that you avoid travelling in temperatures exceeding 30Β°C unless absolutely necessary. In fact, it is illegal for commercial transporters in the UK to transport horses in temperatures above 30Β°C unless the vehicle has certified fans or air conditioning which has a digital temperature monitor. Generally, despite having fans in the horseboxes, we make a call on whether it is wise to travel once the temperature reaches 24Β°C-25Β°C. If the travel is absolutely necessary, then we will move the time to early morning or late night when the temperatures are mostly considerably cooler.

Before travelling your horse in the heat - ask yourself - is it absolutely necessary? Is it in my horse's best interest? If the answer is no then please reconsider.
