Today we’ll be taking Dundee’s very own Unicorn Puppet out on Parade in City Square as part of the Dundee Play Festival. I wanted to share a little background to give some context about how he was created…
In the Autumn of 2024 Andrew and Kathy Kim lead an inspiring giant puppet-making workshop for Dundee City Council. Over an intensive week, artists came together to learn traditional lantern puppet techniques, transforming bamboo, willow, tissue paper, light and imagination into two spectacular illuminated puppets – the Dragon and the Unicorn.
It was a fantastic opportunity to learn new skills, share knowledge and collaborate creatively. The workshop brought together artists from a range of backgrounds, each contributing their own ideas, energy and expertise to the process.
Special thanks to everyone involved:
Mark McGreehin, Niamh O'Loughlin, Rhiannon Rose Moore (Rio), Sarah Scott-Keiller, Beatrice Babbo, Becca Lewis, Donna Campbell,Jessica Innes, Michelle Cranwell, Mary Plaster, Mary Simpson and Rachael Murray.
Much gratitude to Dundee City Council for making the project possible.
Seeing the Dragon and Unicorn come to life and parade through the streets of Dundee was a wonderful reminder of the power of art, storytelling and community collaboration.
