"My dad loves sailing and it was his birthday, so we thought this was a unique experience"

Joy-Anna booked the crossing for her dad Sean's 51st. Dover to Boulogne, under sail. Two cakes smuggled on board, a turn at the helm with the biggest grin we've seen this season, and a daughter laughing "you're fantastic" over the sound of the wind 💙

In her words: "There was a really personal, special feeling to the experience which is so rare"

This is why we do it.

Not the miles. Not the sails. The look on a dad's face when his daughter hands him a moment he'll remember forever, and the kind of conversations that only happen when strangers share a boat and a horizon for a few hours.

We're a tiny team running a tiny boat and every crossing is paid for by people like Joy-Anna who choose to celebrate the people they love differently. With salt on their skin and time on their hands.

A new crew member has joined Echoes ! ⛵️

On April 17th, Ifremer (France's national ocean research institute) fitted a small scientific device on board. It now travels with us on every crossing between Boulogne and Dover, taking a reading every 500 metres.

This stretch of the Channel used to be checked once a month from a research boat. Now, thanks to Echoes, Ifremer scientists get a continuous reading on the move. A first on this zone.

A quiet honour for a small operation, and a reminder of what (not so) slow travel can also make possible.

Mari travelled from Amsterdam to La Panne by train. Then 70km by bike to Boulogne-sur-Mer.

She was supposed to sail on Sunday. But the weather had other plans, so she decided to leave a day early - Saturday - to make it work.

She arrived at the boat, smiling, ready. Bike on board.

At passport control, she realised. It wasn't hers.

She couldn't board. Her whole week had to change. The ride to London, gone.

What struck us was what she said straight after. She didn't want us to talk about her. She wanted us to tell you: check your passport before you leave. Really check it.

We hope to have you on board soon, Mari. Enjoy France this week.

Your enthusiasm through all of this says everything about the kind of travellers we get to meet.

(And the bike ride back through France isn't a bad consolation prize 🇫🇷)

Update: Mari just wrote to us. She found a new route, got a beer, made a new plan. She's now cycling the Velomaritime to Dieppe and heading to Paris with Avenue Verte - and her girlfriend liked the story so much she's joining for the original trip!!

76 crossings. 1,816 miles. 465 passengers, countless bikes, one triplet, a sea kayak and even a viola da gamba 🎻🚲

We didn't just cross the Channel; we reconnected it 🫂

To the pioneers who stepped aboard and the 75 visionary supporters who mobilized this December to raise £9,210: You proved that a carbon-free link isn't just a dream, it’s a demand⛵️

We are done proving the concept. Now, we build the future. This isn't just a ferry service. It’s a movement. And a movement doesn't stop !
