Batley Station has changed forever.

One of the biggest engineering challenges on this section of the Transpennine Route Upgrade has now disappeared beneath the finished railway.

For decades, the station’s pedestrian subway created what became known as the Batley Bump, a dip in the track that required trains to slow down as they passed through.

In this latest update, I take a look back at how the subway worked, why it created the problem, and how engineers permanently closed and infilled it to create a smoother railway capable of supporting higher speeds.

The huge grade separation structure continues to grow, with the replacement road bridge, utility diversions and preparations for the new station all making significant progress.

In this latest update I explain how the new flyover will transform services between Leeds, Huddersfield and Wakefield, and take a closer look at one of the biggest engineering projects on the Transpennine Route Upgrade.

Another look at the latest progress on the TransPennine Route Upgrade, this time between Deighton Station and Bradley Junction.

This update covers the latest developments at Whitacre Street, Wheatley’s Colliery Bridge and Colne Bridge Road, where the replacement bridge is now looking close to completion. With utility diversions, station works and preparations for future electrification all continuing, the transformation of this section of the route is becoming more apparent with every visit.

A major milestone at Huddersfield Station

The new footbridge deck has now been lifted into place during the latest weekend blockade — another big step in the TransPennine Route Upgrade.

This comes just days after the new bridge span was installed, and with more closures planned throughout April, the station is changing quickly.

There’s also ongoing work across the site, including platform construction, viaduct works and new foundations starting to appear.

So much has changed last weekend across the TransPennine Route Upgrade 👀

From bridge replacements and road closures to new structures now fully in place, work is moving quickly across multiple sites — including Huddersfield, Deighton, Ravensthorpe and Micklefield.

One of the biggest milestones… the new span at Huddersfield is now fully supported by its abutments, marking a major step forward in the station transformation.

There’s also new signalling infrastructure going in, piling works underway, and major groundwork happening right across the route.

Manchester Piccadilly has just reopened following Sunday morning engineering works.

In this video, I take a look at the station on its final day of closure, where only a handful of platforms are in use while the rest of the network comes back online. There’s also a close-up look at a tamper train in action and trains waiting out at Ardwick for platforms to reopen.

I’ve also included a visit to Golborne, where a station closed since 1967 is set to return to the network in 2027 — 60 years later.
