ACE Sameday Couriers is delighted to be supporting Derby County Community Trust (DCCT).

Derby County Community Trust (DCCT) is the charitable arm of Derby County Football Club and exists to help improve the lives of the people of Derby and their communities, through sport, physical activity, health and education. It runs a large number of courses and activity sessions through schools, charities and other agencies.

The Trust’s work is more important than ever, with the latest figures showing that Derby and Derbyshire has a lower life expectancy than national average with above average rates of obesity, increased rates of anti-social behaviour and low levels of educational achievement. It is well recognised that sport and physical activity can benefit individuals and communities in many ways.

Aside from physical and mental health improvements that participation in sport can bring, it can also help to change anti-social and negative behavioural patterns, improve school attendance and open new career pathways for people. The Trust runs numerous programmes themed around things such as disability, girls’ football, health, schools sports partnership, education, talent pathway and club development.

DCCT relies on support from Derby County FC, local businesses and fund raising initiatives such as the annual Derby 10k run. The Trust currently offers full-day sports-based courses during school holidays for primary-aged children across Derbyshire.

DCCT Schools and Coaching Manager, Rich Mansfield, said: “Holiday periods can be challenging for children and young people who may not be able to access activities because of their cost or transport availability.

“This funding from ACE Sameday Couriers will allow us to remove these barriers and ensure they can have the same fulfilling experiences as others.

“We will work with the children to see if they have further skills or interests we could develop, whether through our own provision or by linking up with partners who can offer music workshops, arts or cultural trips.”

ACE Sameday Couriers’ Business Development Manager, Chris Scothern, added: “We are delighted to sponsor DCCT and to be able to help children who require support to benefit from the type of holiday activities they might have previously struggled to access.

“Activity sessions offer a fun day out, form lasting memories, spark friendships and uncover hidden talents and should be accessible to everyone.

"Derby County Community Trust does so much valuable work within the city and wider county and we are incredibly proud to be able to support it in the launch of this new scheme. We hope it is a great success.”

Derby County Community Trust will ensure that each holiday coaching course in Derby from Easter 2020 offers spaces funded by this donation.

Although currently buoyant, the logistics industry faces some significant challenges over the coming months and years. Brexit, whatever form it takes, may well provide considerable headaches in the short to medium term but it is the looming skills crisis that gives the most cause for concern further into the future. A driver shortage is beginning to bite and the forthcoming 5th anniversary of the introduction of the Driver CPC will inevitably see some older drivers deciding not to renew their qualification and subsequently drop out of the market.
Alarmingly for the industry, only 9% of the workforce is under 25 years of age but 45% is over 45 years of age. These are stark statistics; as people retire and leave the industry there are not the millennials coming through to replace them, even though Logistics is an industry that contributes over £120bn to the UK economy.
A recent survey by Talent in Logistics, an organisation ‘dedicated to the recruitment, development, engagement and retention of the 2.2 million+ people working in the transport, logistics and warehousing sector’, found that only 8% of young people consider the logistics sector to be an attractive career option.
The survey suggested that part of the reason for the lack of new, younger entrants to the industry is the perception among millennials that gender diversity is low and that there are few interesting or exciting roles within the sector. The survey showed that less than 20% of school and college leavers had received any information or guidance about career choices and the different roles available within the industry.
Ruth Edwards, Business Manager at Talent in Logistics, said: “We are calling upon the sector and the education system to play their part in ensuring young people are aware of the many amazing opportunities and career paths available within logistics.”
Given the shortfall in new, younger entrants to the industry, it is ironic, perhaps, that it is the demands of young people to get goods delivered ever more quickly (“Order before midnight and get delivery the next day”…) is forcing the logistics industry to become increasingly agile and sophisticated and thereby create ever interesting and challenging roles. Technology plays and huge role in moving goods efficiently around the country and there is a constant drive to innovate supply chains. We need to harness the talent of bright students coming out of school and university to make us world leaders in this field.
The threat of a No-deal Brexit and potential delays to freight traffic through ports and airports has prompted talk of shortages of food and pharmaceuticals, line-stoppages at major manufacturing plants and empty supermarket shelves. What clearer illustration could there be of the vital role that Logistics plays in the daily life of the nation?

We were delighted to be host sponsors for both the Nottingham Post and Derby Telegraph Business Awards this year.

Both awards ceremonies have now taken place and as the sound of champagne corks popping and the whooping and cheering of the winners fade away, we can reflect on our first experience of sponsoring these prestigious events.

The venues for each ceremony were a reminder of what makes these two cities great. The Nottingham awards were held at the East Midlands Conference Centre on the Nottingham University campus. Nottingham University is a well-respected seat of learning and has spawned many successful businesses, particularly in the spheres of bio-science and technology, that are based in the city.

The Derby awards were held in the Roundhouse building. Now part of Derby College, it once housed the turntable that rotated the steam locomotives that were such an iconic part of Derby’s rail heritage. Both ceremonies were professionally compered by Gail Emms and Mark Dolan.

Nottingham and Derby are cities with great companies and industries at their hearts. However, proud as we are of the famous names; blue-chippers such as Boots, Bombardier, Rolls Royce, Paul Smith etc, the awards celebrate companies and organisations of all sizes that are successful in their own spheres or make a significant contribution to their communities. As we looked around the room we could see entrepreneurs from small start-up companies rubbing shoulders with bigger, more established corporate players but enjoying equally the recognition that these awards bring.

For the finalists it was a chance to treat their staff, clients and suppliers to a celebratory night out to recognise the part they all play in the success of the business. Regardless of winning, getting to the final nominations is a significant achievement, and the pride of the people in the room was palpable.

For the awards sponsors it had been a fascinating and challenging process of meeting, understanding and evaluating their category entrants. We spoke to many such companies who all spoke of the difficulty of comparing diverse enterprises but who unanimously praised the high calibre of people and organisations that they had encountered. Deciding who should be crowned winners was a challenging task.

As a company that works with clients from many different industries and markets, being a host sponsor for the events reminded us just how diverse our local economy is. As international political uncertainly continues to unsettle the economy, it is clear that we have a huge pool of talented, forward-looking businesses and people that will play a great part in shaping the region’s economic future.

We are delighted to be host sponsors for both the Nottingham Post and Derby Telegraph Business Awards this year. It’s our first time supporting these prestigious events and we’re excited to be involved.

Nominations are open for both awards and there is much anticipation to see which companies will put themselves forward. Nottingham and Derby have 15 and 16 categories of awards respectively so there is plenty of scope for firms and organisations from different industry sectors to get involved. Nominations close at midnight on 15th February for Nottingham and 1st March for Derby.

Nottingham and Derby are cities with great companies and industries at their hearts. Pharmaceuticals, Bioscience, Aerospace and Rail Technologies are a few of the highest profile industry sectors that drive the commercial success of our region and it is home to some of the most prominent players in these markets. However, proud as we are of the famous names (Boots, Bombardier, Rolls Royce, Paul Smith etc) the awards will celebrate companies and organisations of all sizes that are successful in their own spheres or make a significant contribution to their communities. We should shout loudly about the talent that exists in the East Midlands and the diverse and exciting career opportunities that exist here.

Entering for an award is a great excuse to take a step back and look at what you do and how well you do it. Showing the world that you’re proud of your organisation and its people can also be a boost for staff morale. A place at the finalists’ table is a reward for the year’s hard work.

Entries are open until 15th Feb 2019 (Nottingham Post) and 1st March 2019 (Derby Telegraph) so why not nominate your company? Simply go to www.nottinghampostbusinessawards.co.uk or www.derbytelegraphbusinessawards.co.uk to enter.
