Towing a vessel built to the absolute limits of the Exeter Ship Canal leaves no room for error.

Marine Plant Hire was tasked with delivering a newly built landing craft from Exeter to Dartmouth - navigating narrow locks, restricted depths and tight clearances throughout the route.

Using coastal tug Boojum Bay, the team maintained precise control at every stage. Careful planning, constant communication and disciplined ex*****on ensured safe passage through each constraint.

The result: a successful delivery with full asset integrity and zero disruption.
Watch how the team handled one of the most constrained inland marine tows.

Progress towards net zero requires leadership from within the sector.
Marine Plant Hire’s carbon neutral status (scope 1 and 2) signals clear intent: measure what you control, act on it and be transparent about the process.
Working with environmental consultancy Balanced Energy, MPH assessed and offset 81 tCO2e from its direct operations and energy use. The investment supports a UK regenerative sustainability project backed by recognised national brands.

This is not a headline. It is a step towards building confidence for customers and encouraging wider change across marine infrastructure.

Heavy plant, barges and tugs are essential to delivering safe and efficient marine infrastructure. They also come with environmental impact.

That is why has taken action to measure and offset its scope 1 and 2 emissions, achieving carbon neutral status under the GHG Protocol framework.
A total of 81 tonnes of CO2e have been offset through investment in the UK-based Bank Farm Regenerative Project.
This milestone demonstrates that practical, credible progress is possible in the marine sector. It also sets a benchmark for others looking to align with the UK’s net zero ambitions.

Safety. Simplicity. Support for new technology.
That was the ambition behind Workboat Code Edition 3 for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA)

For Marine Plant Hire, it has also strengthened our commercial resilience. We are proud to be featured in a MCA case study recognising the business value of early compliance.
Ben Wheatley, Marine Superintendent and a certified Master, recognised early that leading on compliance would strengthen the company’s market position.
“As Workboat Code Edition 3 approached, we understood how advantageous it would be to lead the sector with vessels properly coded,” he explains. “Essentially, it makes you more commercially resilient – clients are seeing the value in the Code.”
“You’re guiding operators into a more seamanlike, professional manner,” Ben says. “We cannot know how many accidents we have not had because of how we improved the vessels and crew skills.”

By planning ahead, investing in certification and embedding robust safety management across our 24-vessel fleet, we have reinforced client confidence and improved operational standards. Half of our applicable vessels are already fully certified, including crew training. The remainder are on track ahead of the transition deadline.

Compliance is not a last-minute task. It is a strategic investment.

Marine Plant Hire is proud to announce that we are the UK’s first carbon neutral marine plant hire business for scope 1 and 2 emissions.

Achieving carbon neutral status under a framework devised and overseen by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol marks an important step forward for both our business and the wider marine sector.

We have measured and offset 81 tonnes of CO2e from our direct operations and energy use. This has been achieved through verified carbon credits supporting the UK-based Bank Farm Regenerative Project.

For us, this is about accountability. We operate powerful plant and vessels to deliver essential infrastructure, and we recognise the responsibility that comes with that. Taking action on the emissions we can control is part of raising standards across our industry.

In the photo, Webber, Director at Balanced Energy | B Corp (right), presents Eggleton, Managing Director at MPH (left), with certification confirming our carbon neutral status for scope 1 and 2.
