The Dedicated Donations Scheme is available to signed up supporters of No. 2007. New components will be added to this page regularly.

With Tornado now operating successfully on the main line, thoughts inevitably started to turn to "what next for the A1 Steam Trust?" Over the years we have been asked this question many times and more often than not most people's thoughts have turned to Gresley's magnificent

P2s. The Gresley class P2 2-8-2 ‘Mikados’ were the most powerful express passenger locomotives to operate in the UK. They were designed by Sir Nigel Gresley to haul 600 ton trains on the arduous Edinburgh to Aberdeen route. Sadly the design was never fully developed and they were rebuilt by his successor Edward Thompson into ungainly 4-6-2s in 1943/4. Following a feasibility study into the construction of a new P2 - which examined the commercial, engineering and certification challenges that would be faced - The P2 Steam Locomotive Company (charitable status pending) has been formed to bring the project to life. The P2SLC will build the 7th member of the Gresley P2 class steam locomotives. The project will demonstrate how the most powerful class of express passenger steam locomotives to operate in the UK can be fully realised. We will use modern computer design and modelling techniques to enable it to deliver its true potential hauling passenger trains at high speed across the national network. Here's how you can help:

Sponsor a Component - A steam locomotive has many components and we offer our supporters the opportunity to 'sponsor' specific parts and to have their name associated with it. You will receive a certificate and your name will be inscribed on the roll of honour at Darlington Locomotive works in recognition of your valued contribution. Single donation - The Company is happy to receive donations - often as a result of specific fund raising activities. Industrial Sponsorship - We are fortunate in having a number of industrial sponsors who made a great contribution to the construction of Tornado and we actively seek and welcome support from industry.

This Christmas members of the public will once again be able to sponsor a component on Britain’s newest and most powerful express passenger steam locomotive. For a limited time only, parts for giant new Gresley class P2 No. 2007 Prince of Wales will be available for sponsorship to people who are not members of The Founders Club, which funded the project’s dramatic racing-start, or its ‘P2 for the price of a pint’ monthly covenantors. Components sponsored through the Dedicated Donations Scheme range in price from one of over 1,000 driven bolts & nuts for £25 to the complete exhaust steam injector for £15,000 – an ideal Christmas present for the railway enthusiast in your family.

People who subscribe to the Dedicated Donations Scheme will have their names (or that of the gift’s recipient) inscribed on the official roll of honour at Darlington Locomotive Works listing the components sponsored, receive a certificate recording the sponsorship and a copy of the drawing of the component. New components for sponsorship will become available as construction progresses.

“This Christmas you can sponsor a part of giant new steam locomotive No. 2007 Prince of Wales for the railway enthusiast in your family before it is completed; what could be a more appropriate present than helping to recreate the lost days of the steam age? One of the key ways in which we are raising funds for the new locomotive is through supporters sponsoring particular components either on their own behalf, or as a gift for others.”

The lucky recipient of this gift will receive an A4 copy drawing of the component sponsored and a certificate recognising the sponsorship with the dedication worded however the giver wishes. The recipient will have the satisfaction of pointing to the component they have sponsored when the locomotive enters service on Britain’s main line railway in 2021. We have many parts on offer, from individual nuts and bolts to the wheels and chimney, ranging in price from £25 to £15,000.”

NEWLY RELEASED COMPONENTS AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR

We now have various Buffer Springs available to sponsor!
The individual component parts of the buffer springs consist of 1 metal washer and 2 or 3 rubber rings of varying sizes, the rubber washers are then fixed to the metal washers in order.
The small and large individual component springs are then stacked on top of each other to form the full buffer spring, which contains 7 individual small and 3 large springs, plus a rebound spring.

PROGRESS UPDATE AND NEW COMPONENTS LISTED FOR SPONSORSHIP

In contrast to the methods used to assemble Tornado’s boiler cladding, we
are using a different technique for Prince of Wales. Work is now well under way at Darlington Locomotive Works, as the team make a start on building the ‘skeleton’ (unofficially named ‘Craig the Cretaceous’) to support the cladding sheets.
Progress so far has involved the frame design and fitting of the crinoline
rings and handrail batons to the jig.
It will enable the Trust to make the entire cladding before the actual boiler is delivered. This postpones the need for the boiler to be at Darlington Locomotive Works by at least six months. Once the boiler cladding is finished and primed, it will be dismantled and stored, pending fitting to the boiler in 2020!

If you wish to see the progress on No. 2007 for yourself, the works will be open to the public tomorrow between 10am and 4pm, access is via Head Of Steam Museum, North Road Station, Darlington, DL3 6ST.

HARNESS THE POWER OF STEAM THIS FATHER’S DAY

Sponsor a component and help to build Britain’s most powerful steam locomotive

As the project to build new Gresley class P2 steam locomotive No. 2007 Prince of Wales prepares for the wheeling of the engine in the autumn, only four years after its launch, a new batch of components has been released for sponsorship in time for Father’s Day on Sunday 18th June 2017.

Dedicated Donations are normally only available to existing supporters but are being made generally available in the run up to Father’s Day. In addition to being able to sponsor one of the ‘18 spokes of the 6ft 2in driving wheels’ for £600 (or £25pm for 24 months), other components now available for sponsorship range from a ‘Hornblock Driven Bolt & Nut’ at £25, a ‘Pony Truck Bearer Spring’ at £125, ‘Cartazzi wheelset, axlebox & bearing assembly’ at £700 (or £28 per month for 25 months), ‘Driving coupled wheelset roller bearing’ at £1,050 (or £52 per month for 25 months), a ‘Cartazzi axlebox casting’ at £1,300 (or from £50 per month for 26 months), a Crank axle crank sweep forging LH at £3600 (or £100 per month for 36 months), the ‘Pony truck axle’ at £4,440 (or £70 per month for 60 months), to a ‘6ft 2in Driving Wheel Casting and Proof Machining’ at £12,000 (or £200pm for 60 months). People who subscribe to the scheme will have their names (or the name of the person the gift is for) inscribed on the official roll of honour at Darlington Locomotive Works listing the components sponsored, receive a certificate recording the sponsorship and copy of the drawing of the component.

Mark Allatt, Trustee and P2 Project Director, The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, commented:

“We are delighted with the support the project to build Britain’s most powerful steam locomotive has received since its launch three years ago, with over £2.3m of the required £5m pledged to-date. We are confident that we will have the engine on its wheels this autumn and remain on-track for completion in 2021. However, to maintain this progress we need to raise £700,000 per year. We are therefore taking the opportunity of Father’s Day to give the Dedicated Donation scheme a boost.

“This initiative is a unique opportunity for supporters to have their father or grandfather’s name associated with a component of No. 2007 and the funds raised will help to ensure that Prince of Wales will be completed on schedule. Just as with the similar scheme that helped to fund the construction of now world-famous Tornado, supporters who subscribe to the scheme will have the satisfaction of pointing to the part of the locomotive they paid for when No. 2007 enters service. 2017 will see further major announcements as the construction of Prince of Wales gathers pace.”

The original class P2 locomotives were fitted with gravity fed sanders for the leading coupled wheels and steam sanders for the driving (second) coupled axle - no back sanders were fitted.
With No. 2007 likely to do significant work in reverse, mostly on heritage railways, haulage of substantial loads over significant gradients running tender first is likely to happen, so all of the sanders will be air operated.
