Something different for a change. This owners prop shaft slid back while cruising and prop hit the rudder. Turned out the taper lock bush in the old Fenner coupling had split and fell in half. As luck would have it I had two of them sat in the back of one of my cupboards. All sorted, happy days!

FOR SALE - 'Rosie' - £39,500.00. A 45' semi trad style narrowboat. Built by Liverpool boats in 1998. Very clean and tidy boat with everything you need powered by a 38hp Isuzu engine. Boat has recently spared no expense with stern pram cover and forward cratch cover. There is a Boat Safety certificate that doesn't run out till August 2027. You'll find a nicely equipped galley, a good sized fixed double bed and a quaint solid fuel stove in the lounge. The boat has a (non residential) mooring at the sought after Herons Rest Marina which can be retained with the purchase of the boat if required. Another day when people's ingenuity amazes me! Recently purchased boat with a smell of gas, but not sure. Found this attempt to blank off the gas line after something was removed beyond the test point.

I'm always coming across this sort of thing when checking ventilation on gas jobs and Boat Safety examinations. I can't feed my ruler through the vent, so remove the louvres and find this. I know why boaters do it, especially liveaboards as it can be a chilly breeze entering in winter. But vents are there for a reason. Did you know that 30 boaters have died in the last 20 years and 21 have ended up seriously ill in hospital during the same period due to carbon monoxide poisoning. There is even a label above the vent. Please dont do this floaty folk, no more deaths please.

A lucky escape!
Now then boys and girls what can we learn from watching this.
1, Never tie your boat up to the rung of a lock ladder when it's empty and you're going uphill.
2, Always have a sharp knife handy for cutting ropes in case you do something silly such as in number one!
3,Can anyone spot the other mistake being made?
