The detail you might not notice...🛠️

Every Towmate trailer goes through a torque check on key components including the wheels, couplings, A-frame and axle bolts.

And we do it twice – once during the build and again once the trailer is complete.

Why? Because components can settle during assembly, so that second check helps confirm everything is still correctly torqued.

Once checked, each one is marked with a white pen, so everyone knows it’s been done – even if they weren’t the person who carried out the work.

It’s a small detail. But when it comes to safety, nothing is too small to matter.

Wales & West Utilities needed a safer, more efficient way to transport excavator attachments.

There wasn’t an off-the-shelf trailer that did what they needed.

So we engineered one.

After prototyping, real-world testing and six months of trials, the final design provided dedicated storage for the excavator bucket and breaker, allowing them to be loaded and unloaded at the kerbside.

The result? Over 75 trailers ordered.

Bespoke engineering is what we do best: understand the problem, test the solution and keep refining until it works in the real world.

MEET SAM

From vehicle maintenance and repair to building some of Towmate’s most specialist trailers, Sam has always had a passion for engineering – and for seeing the result of a job well done.

These days, he’s part of the team building trailers in our factory, moving from standard builds to increasingly specialist and bespoke products.

And for Sam, that’s one of the best parts of the job.

“You can see exactly what you’ve achieved.”

Outside of work, Sam puts that same mindset into one of his other passions: high-end mountain bikes. Buying, modifying, improving and repairing them – because apparently, even his hobbies need a bit of engineering. 🚵‍♂️

But what’s really stood out to Sam since joining Towmate is the people.

He’s worked in other environments where everyone has their own job to do. At Towmate, he’s found something different – people look out for each other, share knowledge and genuinely want to help.

“They invest in your training, but they also invest in you as a person.”

Good engineering starts with good people.

And Sam is a big part of ours.

When Sapphire Utilities needed an incident control trailer to support its response to environmental incidents such as floods and spills, an off-the-shelf solution wasn’t going to meet the brief.

Working closely with their team, we developed a bespoke, curtain-sided spill control trailer incorporating:

✔ An enclosed garage compartment for a quad bike
✔ Dedicated storage for the quad bike trailer
✔ A small front-mounted crane for loading and unloading
✔ Space for transporting straw bales used to create temporary retaining walls
✔ Additional secure storage for spill-response equipment

It’s a great example of what can happen when we start with the customer’s operational challenge and engineer the trailer around what they actually need.
