Right now, in a Cotswold field near Frampton Mansell, hundreds of pumpkins are scattered across the grass, waiting to be found and picked by discerning children of all ages. Once again, the Jolly Nice Farm Shop is hosting its annual Pumpkin Patch.

The patch runs until 31st October, and tickets can be bought online. Wear your boots and wrap up warmly as you're likely to roam around for some time in awe at the multitude of pumpkins of all shapes and sizes, and the ground may be muddy.

Once you have picked your pumpkin and coaxed the children back from the field, the farmshop deserves your attention for a browse or more. Built in what was formerly a petrol station, it is now a Cotswold larder, stocking produce from more than 70 local farmers and makers. From loose vegetables to free-range sausages and steaks from Cotswolds farms, to Woodchester Valley w**e made ten miles away in the Stroud valleys. A cheese counter that runs from Stinking Bishop to Vacherin Mont d'Or.

Before you leave, you must visit the café. Log fire going, fairy lights strung through the rafters, the smell of coffee and something fresh from the kitchen. A reason to stay longer than you meant to.

📍 Jolly Nice Farm Shop, Frampton Mansell, GL6 8HZ. Just off the A419 between Stroud and Cirencester.

There is no wrong time to visit the Cotswolds. The seasons don't diminish these villages. They reveal different parts of them.
The light may change, the skies, the foliage, the pace.

The reason to visit never does.

Get out into the Cotswolds this weekend - whatever the weather.

The Market Cross has stood at the centre of Stow-on-the-Wold's square since the medieval wool fairs. Or at least, part of it has.

The base and socket stone are 14th-century. The shaft is Victorian, added during an 1878 restoration when the cross had spent years headless and repurposed as a lamp standard. The head you can see from across the square was carved and installed in 1995, replacing one that had blown over the year before.

Look closely at the carving facing you, and you can make out two figures either side of an oak tree, thought to be Charles I and Oliver Cromwell, with the date 1646 beneath them: the year the Civil War ended in this very square.

Three different centuries, three different reasons for caring about the same structure, and from a distance, it looks like one coherent medieval monument.

Compton Abdale doesn't appear on many itineraries. It sits off the main routes, quiet by design, the kind of village you find when you're not looking for anything in particular.

At the road junction, there's a stone trough fed by a spring. It's easy to drive past without giving it a second glance. Look closer and there's a 19th-century crocodile carved into the stonework by a local stonemason, mouth open, water rushing through it.

The carving hides through summer under ivy and growth. Late autumn and winter are when it shows itself properly.

The Cotswolds saves certain things for those who know when to look.

The crocodile water spout at Compton Abdale is a Grade II listed structure, placed on the National Heritage List for England in 1986. It was built by George Curtis of Hazleton in the mid-19th century. Spring water still runs from the crocodile's mouth into the trough below, cold and consistent, just as it always has. Walkers and cyclists still drink from it today.

Gotherington Halt was built in 1906 to serve villages that probably never imagined a crowd like the one that turned up for the Cotswold Festival of Steam in May.

What you don’t see in this footage is why our train paused before the pass. The token machine that governs single line working had stuck, meaning only one solution remained: a man, physically carrying the authority to proceed, walking between the two trains to hand it over.

The GWSR’s next event is the Mixed Traction Extravaganza, 10 and 11 October. Tokens permitting.

The recent rainy weather has meant spending more time indoors when visiting Cotswold Villages.
But thankfully The Willow in Bourton-on-the-Water provided not only a warm and dry respite from the rain, but delivered a superb Sunday Roast too!

Highly recommended - and not just on Sundays!
