When we first started thinking about a name for the pub, we wanted to follow the same idea as The Tite & Locke in Lancaster and find two names with strong local connections and a link to the railways.

It sounds easy. It really isn’t.

There are weeks of research involved, plenty of checking to make sure nobody has too many skeletons in the cupboard, and then the small matter of finding two names that actually sound good together.

In the end, we went with Sir Walter Scott and Thomas Brassey.

Brassey was a particularly good fit for Carlisle. He was heavily involved in building the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway, including the notoriously difficult route over Shap, so the connection is very much a local one.

A few months ago, the Thomas Brassey Society got in touch and asked if we would like a framed picture and plaque for the pub. Of course we said yes.

John Violet from the Society then made a special trip with friends to hand deliver them, which was a lovely touch.

They have now been up for a couple of weeks and look right at home.

Something for the real ale drinkers… it’s taken a few weeks (we are sometimes slow workers) but our Carlisle cask ale cards are now live.

Grab a card while you’re at the bar, get it stamped for each cask ale pint. They’re there now for you to pick up. Build up your stamps and every 10th cask pint is on us.

We do this at all our Cumbrian venues and it’s just a bit of a thank you to our regulars.

There will be a proper launch and social media post in the next few days! More details to come. 🍺🍻

We’re bringing live music to Friday nights at Scott & Brassey, with a different local performer joining us each week.

It all starts TOMORROW, Friday 31st July, as we welcome our first performer, Kyle Newrick KN Music, playing live from 8pm to 10pm. 🎤🍻

Pop down early, grab a seat and get comfy before Kyle takes to the stage! 🎶

We’ve got craft, cask ales, draught lagers, wines, spirits, cocktails and soft drinks ... all properly looked after and served just right 🍻

There’s always something interesting on, and plenty of choice if you fancy trying something new ✨

97% finished. Still a few things to sort - cask club (loyalty scheme), full whisky range/menu and other things - but we’re a bit closer now.

Gardens are open, the carpark garden will make more sense when the planned changes happen to the station carpark, but it is at least somewhere to sit and get some fresh air on a nice day. The keg wall menu is up and running, you’ll see the keg options improve as we settle into a rhythm and… we have a couple of dozen whiskies now, with more to come. Still more to do on our beer fridge offering and we have many more spirit bottles to arrive.

Also included a photo of our cellar drop, which has been completely refurbished and now works. We’ve been told it was originally the drop for the butchers, located below the bar in the late 19th century.

In more important news, it’s a beautiful Cumbrian day today!

We’ve had an unexpected change at Scott & Brassey, which means we’re now looking for a new Venue Manager to join the team.

We’re after someone who takes pride in what they do, leads from the front and can help us keep standards high while building a strong, reliable team.

It’s a hands-on role - you’ll be on the floor, running shifts, training the team and making sure the bar is looking its best and running properly every day.

We’re looking for:
– Experience in hospitality management or supervision
– Good knowledge of craft beer and cask ale
– Confidence behind the bar (cocktails included)
– Someone who notices the details and gets them sorted

The role is 4 days per week (45 hours) with alternate weekends off once the team is settled, and salary is £34–36k per annum depending on experience.
