97% finished. Still a few things to sort - cask club (loyalty scheme), full whisky range/menu and other things - but we’re a bit closer now.

Gardens are open, the carpark garden will make more sense when the planned changes happen to the station carpark, but it is at least somewhere to sit and get some fresh air on a nice day. The keg wall menu is up and running, you’ll see the keg options improve as we settle into a rhythm and… we have a couple of dozen whiskies now, with more to come. Still more to do on our beer fridge offering and we have many more spirit bottles to arrive.

Also included a photo of our cellar drop, which has been completely refurbished and now works. We’ve been told it was originally the drop for the butchers, located below the bar in the late 19th century.

In more important news, it’s a beautiful Cumbrian day today!

We’ve had an unexpected change at Scott & Brassey, which means we’re now looking for a new Venue Manager to join the team.

We’re after someone who takes pride in what they do, leads from the front and can help us keep standards high while building a strong, reliable team.

It’s a hands-on role - you’ll be on the floor, running shifts, training the team and making sure the bar is looking its best and running properly every day.

We’re looking for:
– Experience in hospitality management or supervision
– Good knowledge of craft beer and cask ale
– Confidence behind the bar (cocktails included)
– Someone who notices the details and gets them sorted

The role is 4 days per week (45 hours) with alternate weekends off once the team is settled, and salary is £34–36k per annum depending on experience.

If this sounds like you - or someone you know - please apply via Indeed.

Not finished yet with the place…

Our spirits wall is still a work in progress, we’re up to 120 (ish) after adding another 40 bottles today and we still have a lot more to add. Whisky options are next to be significantly expanded. 🥃🥃🥃

Our keg wall menu will be getting a big upgrade too, at the moment we don’t really tell you enough. Being sorted. 📋📋📋

Got ladders now for the staff members unfortunate enough to be under under 8 foot tall. So now they can reach some of the higher shelves. 🪜

We are now 97% finished after another forty pictures were added to the walls today, plus mirrors, signs, greenery and Lord know what else.

We have a lot of spirit bottles still to arrive to populate the spirits wall behind the bar and there are more local staff now in place.

Thanks to everyone who came over this last weekend, we (just about) coped but we’ll be sharper and quicker this weekend, now we know what we’re doing. Lot more stock in place as well!

Still to sort the car-park beer garden but, with the weather how it is, there’s really no mad rush. It’ll be ready within the fortnight.

Thanks again for the lovely Carlisle welcome, we’ve really appreciated all the encourging comments. You’ve been fantastic. 🍺🍺🍺🤩

Quick update on where we are... yesterday was a whirlwind of tidying, cleaning and fixing - then hours of interviews and media.

Thank you to the many people who have already visited and also thanks for the many kind comments. You can stop now, or it'll just go to our heads.

Now we have lots of other important tasks. That will include ordering more stock (there are gaps in what will normally have in permanent supply including things like fruit ciders, lots more spirits and brandy...), organising the staff situation, lighting, mirrors, more pictures, the outside areas and many other things. Lots to do.

So bear with us... we are still finding our feet, just in the set up there are probably another 40-50 pictures to go up, more furniture in certain parts (leather chairs in front of the pretend fire (for instance) and lighting over the bar.

We'll be much closer to the finished article this time next week. In the meantime, we're open everyday from 11am, we are dog friendly, we close 10pm Sun-Thurs and 11pm Fri/Sat. If we don't have something, ask for it. See you soon.🍻🍻

We are open!

So... after years of thinking, planning and doing we are finally open at Carlisle railway station. The Scott & Brassey is something a bit different for Carlisle (we hope).

Opening hours are 11am to 10pm Sunday to Thursday, 11am to 11pm Friday and Saturday.

We must thank lots of people: Network Rail, The Railway Heritage Trust and Avanti, who all made the project actually happen. And then all the people who made the bar including some fantastic local companies: Krol (Ade and team), Dave & Gary our wonderful decorators, Andy Townley (electricals), Scott Redpath (skilled carpenters and bar builders), Cloud 2 IT (who managed the impossible by getting the wifi installed), Innserve (installing the keg lines), Brian Frankland (who beautifully fitted our copper hand pull beer engines), Dave Longcake (local locksmith) who installed a door lock at the very last moment.

Finally a quick thanks to Amelia Wilson who did the design from our MD's initial ideas and then ran with it. There are approaching 200 pictures in the venue and most mean something... then the colour scheme, the little railway flourishes... it was a Herculean task.

Here are a few photos. 📷

When we open, you’ll see plenty of references to Carlisle’s Citadel station dotted around the place. Old photos, railway details, colours, framed pictures and odd touches.

A contemporary bar but with half a bespectacled eye on the past.

Most of the detail has come straight out of these books. So credit where it’s due. 📕

Last photos before we start preparing for our opening.

Tomorrow we start dressing the windows, putting up pictures, preparing the bar. The colour scheme on display here will look very different by the time we open. All the colours we’re using have been picked specifically for their Victorian heritage. There’s another room (not photographed) tucked away at the back, a “snug” type area which we’ve called The Carriages.

The handpull beer engines (8) are going in today, the keg wall tomorrow - we’re going to be another decent place in Carlisle for beer lovers to visit.

Floor is finished so we can start cleaning the place. Outside tables arrive on Tuesday, fitters for the interior furniture are due on Friday, glassware and electrical items early next week. Over 100 lightbulbs yet to fit and almost 100 pictures to put up. The new air source heating system is working well, it’s quite toasty.

Can confirm the Platform 4 toilets will be open until 30 mins after we close each night.

Beer will be ordered soon. 7 cask beers, plus one cask cider. 20 keg beers including 12 on the keg wall. Plus a large soft drink selection.

5m high spirit wall will go in early next week.

We should have an opening date to announce very, very soon. ⏱️⏱️⏱️

Some photos from under the new pub. The eagle eyed will spot old meat hooks from a previous butcher business (many many years ago) and an old WW2 firing range.

Also included are some early shots of our new beer cellar which is starting to go in, and a photo of the Piccadilly Junction of pipes and metal work under the new bar service area.

Lots to do still… 🕰️

Latest photos. Oak floor is going in.

We’re hoping the ceiling becomes a real focal point. It’s beautiful but needs a bit of TLC and painting - it’ll look a bit different by the time we open.

Decoration has started but weeks of work yet. Cellar cooling went in today. We open next month. Stress levels about to ramp up! 😥
