Enjoy root vegetables and squashes whilst in season. They taste great in soups and casseroles or roasted with wholegrain rice, couscous or quinoa. They are low in fat and cholesterol, making them heart-healthy choices and are rich in dietary fibre, which aids digestion, helps regulate blood sugar levels, and supports weight management. You may have heard claims about the health benefits of fermented food – anti-inflammatory, immune boosting anti-diabetic, mood and cognitive benefits and even blood pressure improvements. Well the great news is there is evidence that supports these claims. Fermented foods are left to sit and steep until the sugars and carbs interact with bacteria, yeast and microbes resulting in the creation of healthy probiotics, the key to gut health. Fermented food also has a high concentration of vitamins and minerals. Try: natural yogurt with live cultures, kefir, tofu, miso and sauerkraut but start with small amounts to let your gut adjust! Enjoy.
