Steam Services Temporarily Suspended

Due to the current prolonged dry conditions and increased risk of lineside fires, the East Lancashire Railway has taken the decision, in conjunction with the Fire and Rescue Service, to temporarily suspend steam locomotive operations for the foreseeable future.

During this period, our scheduled services will continue to operate using heritage diesel locomotives, so visitors can still enjoy a journey along the East Lancashire Railway as planned.

This decision has been taken as a precaution to protect our passengers, staff, volunteers, neighbouring communities and the surrounding countryside. Existing tickets remain valid, and no action is required from customers. The only change will be the type of locomotive operating your service.

We appreciate that some visitors may specifically be looking forward to travelling behind a steam locomotive, and we are sorry for any disappointment this may cause. Safety must remain our priority. Steam services will resume as soon as conditions have improved sufficiently for us to operate them safely.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support.

Sunday 9th August service update ๐Ÿ“ฃ๐Ÿ“ฃ

Due to the hot weather and fire risk along the railway, todayโ€™s booked steam passenger services will be hauled by heritage diesel locomotive D5054, we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. However, today is now an ideal chance to enjoy some vintage Type 1 and 2 Diesel action with Class 20 069 also operating on the diesel diagram, an ideal way to come and enjoy the Irwell Valley and explore the line.

Our lunchtime dining service will still be hauled by steam with 34092 โ€˜City of Wellsโ€™.

As we announced on Monday night, GWR Pannier Tank No. 7714 is making its very first visit to the ELR! ๐Ÿคฉ

7714 will be joining our already announced visiting locomotive, S15 30506, alongside our home fleet lineup, with a further guest yet to be announced. We really canโ€™t wait to see this Kerr Stuart-built workhorse heading through the Irwell Valley!

A massive thank you to the wonderful Severn Valley Railway and the SVR Pannier Tank Fund for making this possible, we always enjoy taking our engines to the SVR so it will be brilliant to host them at the ELR this time round.

Check out some video of the locomotive in action on some of its previous visits away from the SVR to the The Keighley and Worth Valley Railway and Llangollen Railway.

๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ More details will be added to the website along with tickets going on sale soon, keep your eye on our page for further updates: www.eastlancsrailway.org.uk/events-activities/autumn-steam-gala/
