🔧 WORKSHOP INSIGHT | The job isn't finished until the paperwork is

In a busy workshop, it's easy to focus on getting the vehicle repaired, tested and back to the customer.

But accurate records are part of doing the job properly too.

Whether it's an MOT, diagnostic work, calibration, inspection or repair, make sure the relevant information is recorded clearly while the details are still fresh.

That means:

📝 Recording what was checked and what was found
🔧 Documenting the work carried out
📋 Keeping reports and supporting evidence where required
✅ Making sure records are complete before closing the job

Good record keeping protects the technician, the workshop and the customer – and makes life considerably easier if a question is raised later.

💡 Tech Tip Tuesday

ADAS doesn't have to be damaged to be affected.

Work such as wheel alignment, suspension repairs, windscreen replacement or changes to vehicle geometry can potentially affect the position or operation of ADAS sensors.

🔧 The important bit? Know when calibration may be required.

Understanding where ADAS systems and sensors are fitted, what they do and why correct calibration matters is becoming increasingly important for everyone working around modern vehicles, not just the technician carrying out the calibration.

A little awareness can help you recognise when further checks or specialist work may be needed.

Our Level 1 Award in ADAS Awareness is a half-day, theory-based course designed to provide that foundation, with no formal entry requirements and suitability for both technical and non-technical staff.

🔧 IN THE NEWS - AI is making its way into the workshop

AI might be dominating conversations across plenty of industries, but what does it actually mean for technicians?

Bosch is introducing an AI assistant into its ESI[tronic] diagnostic software, designed to help technicians identify faults and find relevant repair information more quickly.

As vehicles become increasingly complex, tools like this could help technicians cut down the time spent searching through technical information and focus more quickly on diagnosing and repairing the vehicle.

But the technology is only part of the equation.

Understanding the information, knowing what to test and having the technical knowledge to make the right repair decisions still comes down to the person using it.

🔧 WORKSHOP INSIGHT: DON’T LET THE ROUTINE BECOME AUTOMATIC

When you inspect the same types of vehicles every day, it’s easy to fall into a routine.

But routine shouldn’t mean rushing.

A consistent inspection process helps make sure the basics don’t get missed – particularly across areas such as brakes, steering, suspension, lights, tyres and chassis.

Take the extra moment to:

🔧 Follow the same inspection sequence every time.
👀 Look properly rather than assuming something is OK because it usually is.
📝 Record defects and findings accurately.
🚐 Consider the overall condition of the vehicle, not just individual components.

Experience makes you quicker. A good process makes sure you stay thorough.

That combination matters when you're responsible for assessing whether a vehicle is roadworthy.

A good vehicle inspection isn't just about spotting a defect – it's about assessing it correctly.

When inspecting light commercial vehicles, consistency matters. Work methodically through key areas including:

🔧 Brakes and steering
🚐 Suspension and chassis
💡 Lights and electrical systems
🛞 Tyres and overall condition

And remember – identifying the defect is only part of the job. Correctly categorising it and accurately documenting your findings are just as important.

A consistent inspection routine helps make sure nothing gets overlooked and gives you confidence that every vehicle has been assessed to the same standard.

📰 IN THE NEWS: VEHICLE SAFETY AND STANDARDS UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT

A recent multi-agency enforcement operation has highlighted just how important good processes, accurate records and high standards remain across the automotive industry.

Operation Ignition saw Trading Standards, police and specialist vehicle examiners carry out unannounced inspections at used-car businesses following concerns around vehicle safety, misleading sales practices and poor aftercare.

Checks included brakes, tyres, steering, warning lights and structural condition, alongside pre-sale checks, repair records, documentation and workshop practices.

For garages and automotive professionals, it's another reminder that doing the job properly isn't simply about passing an inspection.

Consistent processes, competent technicians, accurate records and keeping skills and knowledge up to date all play a part in protecting customers - and your business.
