The Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF) has raised concerns that proposed changes to UK vehicle regulations could leave independent garages facing greater restrictions on accessing security-related repair information.

🔎 IN THE NEWS - Another MOT Testing Guide update – is your site keeping up?

DVSA has published another amendment to the MOT Testing Guide, this time clarifying requirements around roller brake tester floor plates and brake testing standing areas.

It might sound like a small technical change, but it’s another reminder that running an MOT testing station means keeping on top of an evolving set of standards, processes and responsibilities.

And it hasn’t been the only change this year.

From quality control requirements and changes to the MOT Testing Service to updated disciplinary processes and photos at test, 2026 has already brought plenty for MOT centre owners, AEs and testers to stay on top of.

🔧 TECH TIP TUESDAY: Don’t assume isolated means safe

When working on an electric or hybrid vehicle, switching the ignition off doesn’t mean the high-voltage system is safe to work on.

Before carrying out repair or replacement work, technicians need to understand the correct high-voltage safety procedures and follow the appropriate process for the vehicle and system they’re working on.

And as more EVs and hybrids come through workshop doors, that knowledge is becoming increasingly important.

📰 IN THE NEWS: Are high-mileage EVs proving more reliable than petrol cars?

New research analysing 47.4 million MOT tests has found that higher-mileage electric vehicles could actually be less likely to fail an MOT than their petrol equivalents.

Between 90,000 and 120,000 miles, the research found an MOT failure rate of 16.5% for EVs compared with 22.1% for petrol vehicles.

But there’s an important takeaway for workshops.

The data highlighted areas where EVs experienced more issues, including tyre defects and friction-brake problems.

As more EVs enter the used vehicle market and clock up higher mileage, workshops are going to see more of them coming through the doors.

For technicians, that means understanding how these vehicles differ, what to look out for and having the right skills to inspect, maintain and repair them safely.
