⚡ Electric Vans Up to 4250kg – Is Your MOT Station Ready?

As more electric vans enter service across the UK, MOT testing requirements are evolving to keep pace.

A recent update means that many zero-emission goods vehicles between 3,501kg and 4,250kg now fall under Class 7 MOT testing rather than HGV testing.

For MOT stations, this could create new opportunities but it also raises important questions:

🔧 Do you have the right authorisations in place?

🔧 Is your equipment suitable?

🔧 Are your technicians trained and confident working with these vehicles?

🔧 Have you considered the EV-specific safety implications?

As electric commercial vehicles become increasingly common, understanding these changes now could help your business stay ahead of the curve.

We've taken a closer look at what the changes mean and what MOT stations should be considering.

From 1 June 2026, electric vans weighing up to 4,250kg are now tested under the Class 7 MOT scheme rather than the HGV testing regime.

🔎 In the Spotlight: Level 2 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Hazard Management for Emergency & Recovery Personnel

As EV numbers continue to rise, emergency responders and recovery operators are increasingly being faced with high-voltage vehicles at roadside incidents and recovery scenes.

Here are some of the key challenges we’re seeing and how this course provides the solution:
⚠️ “We’re attending incidents involving EVs, but aren’t always confident identifying the risks”
👉 This course teaches safe methods for assessing and handling electric and hybrid vehicles at the scene of an incident, including hazard identification and first-response safety.

⚠️ “We need to understand how to safely isolate and shut down EV systems”
👉 Covers safe isolation and shutdown procedures, helping teams reduce risk when dealing with damaged or immobilised vehicles.

⚠️ “Our teams need clearer protocols when responding to EV-related incidents”
👉 Training includes first response protocols and hazard management procedures, supporting safer and more consistent incident handling.

⚠️ “We’re unsure how to identify different EV systems and warning signs”
👉 Covers identifying warning signs and system types, helping responders recognise potential hazards quickly and accurately.

⚠️ “We need specialist EV safety training tailored to recovery and emergency roles”
👉 Specifically designed for emergency responders, roadside technicians and recovery operators working in real-world incident environments.

⚠️ “We need practical training that builds confidence in high-pressure situations”
👉 A focused 3-day course in Burton on Trent, combining practical and knowledge-based assessments to develop safe working practices around EV incidents.

As electric and hybrid vehicles become more common on UK roads, understanding how to safely respond to EV-related incidents is becoming increasingly important for recovery and emergency personnel.

This qualification provides the knowledge and confidence needed to assess hazards, protect teams and respond safely in real-world situations.

🚗 In the News...
The conversation around vehicle security is ramping up again, particularly around keyless car theft and the technology being used by organised crime groups.

A recent article highlighted new UK legislation targeting electronic devices used in vehicle theft, including signal relays, jammers and CAN bus injectors used to bypass keyless entry systems.

You can read the article here:

As vehicles become increasingly connected and software-driven, the automotive industry is evolving far beyond traditional mechanical repair.

From EV systems and ADAS technology through to cybersecurity and vehicle security awareness, the role of the modern technician continues to change rapidly.

At Pro-Tech we’re continuing to see growing demand for training and industry conversations focused on keeping workshops and technicians future-ready ⚡

Because modern vehicles aren’t just changing how we drive…
They’re changing the skills the industry needs too.

NEW legislation has come into force to crack down on gangs using high-tech gadgets to steal cars in England and Wales. These devices can be picked up cheaply online and are routinely passed between…

⚠️ QC checks shouldn’t just be a tick-box exercise.

Done properly, they help identify:
🔹 Small issues before they become bigger problems
🔹 Inconsistencies in testing
🔹 Gaps in process or understanding
🔹 Areas where additional support may be needed

Ultimately, they help protect standards, compliance and confidence.

We’ve pulled together a new blog looking at why regular QC checks are so important and how to make sure they’re actually effective.

👉 Read it here: https://pro-techacademy.co.uk/why-regular-qc-checks-are-essential-and-how-to-get-them-right/

Because good QC isn’t about catching people out…
👉 It’s about creating better, more consistent standards across the workshop.

If you run an MOT site or you’re an MOT Tester yourself, Quality Control (QC) checks are something you’ll hear mentioned regularly. But in practice, QC is one of the areas we see misunderstood, overlooked, or incorrectly applied far too often.

🔎 In the Spotlight: Level 2 Technical Specialist in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Routine Maintenance Activities (Award)

As more EVs and hybrids enter workshops, routine servicing is changing and technicians need the skills to work safely around electric vehicles.

Here are some of the key challenges we’re seeing and how this course provides the solution:
⚠️ “We want to work on EVs safely, but don’t want technicians exposed to high-voltage systems”
👉 This course provides the knowledge and skills needed to safely carry out routine maintenance on electric and hybrid vehicles without touching high-voltage systems.

⚠️ “Our team needs confidence identifying EV systems and layouts”
👉 Covers electric and hybrid vehicle layouts and identification, helping technicians understand how these vehicles are structured and operate.

⚠️ “We’re unsure about the correct safety precautions in the workshop”
👉 Training includes safety precautions when working on or near electric vehicles, building safer workshop practices and awareness.

⚠️ “We need to understand the right tools and equipment for EV work”
👉 Covers tools and workshop safety equipment for EV environments, ensuring technicians understand what’s required when servicing electric vehicles.

⚠️ “We need a practical starting point for technicians beginning their EV journey”
👉 Designed for those at the start of their EV training journey or with general maintenance experience, making it an ideal progression course.

⚠️ “We need focused training that fits around workshop demands”
👉 A practical 2-day course in Burton on Trent, combining knowledge and hands-on assessments to build real confidence in the workshop.

As EV adoption continues to grow, workshops need technicians who can confidently and safely carry out routine maintenance activities on electric and hybrid vehicles.

This course provides the essential next step for teams preparing for the future of vehicle servicing.

🚗 In the News...
The UK automotive industry is facing a growing skills shortage and it’s starting to impact everything from repair times to customer confidence.

A recent report highlighted by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) warns that the accident repair sector is losing around 4,700 skilled workers every year, while only around 3,000 new entrants are joining the industry.

As vehicles become more advanced, particularly with EV technology and ADAS systems, the demand for highly skilled technicians is only increasing.

This isn’t just a recruitment challenge.

It’s a training, retention and future-readiness challenge for the entire industry.

At Pro-Tech we’re continuing to see workshops and businesses investing in practical, hands-on development to help future-proof their teams and keep pace with evolving technology ⚡

Because keeping the automotive industry moving doesn’t just rely on the vehicles…
It relies on having skilled people behind them.
