🚛 Why Does Sofa Removal Cost More Than Your Council Collection?

Let Us Be Honest With You.
We get it. You’ve seen the council offering to take 6 bulky items for £40 and then you get a quote from us and wonder what on earth is going on.

We’re not ripping you off.

Here’s the truth.

The law changed.

Something called POPs legislation (Persistent Organic Pollutants) now means that sofas, armchairs and upholstered furniture can NO longer go to landfill or standard waste facilities. They have to be taken to specialist treatment plants — and we are charged £40+VAT per item just to drop them off.

Then on top of that — we’re charged by weight.

That sofa isn’t just £40+VAT to dispose of because of POPs. We’re also charged for every kilo it weighs on top of that fee. A large corner sofa can be heavy. Those weight charges add up fast — and every penny of that comes out of our pocket before we’ve made a single thing.

So by the time you factor in the POPs charge, the weight charge, the fuel, the driver’s wages, the vehicle, the insurance and the licence fees — you can see why a sofa removal isn’t a £10 job anymore.

So how is the council doing it so cheap?
That’s a question we ask too. The honest answer is — you’re already paying for it through your council tax. The true cost isn’t covered by what they charge you at the door. The rest comes out of public funds. We don’t have that safety net. Every single job has to cover its own costs or we don’t survive as a business.

We’re small businesses trying to do things properly.

We pay every disposal fee. Every weight charge. We follow every regulation. We carry the licences, the insurance, and the paperwork the law demands. We’re not cowboys — we’re the ones doing it by the book while the cost of doing it by the book keeps climbing.

Because of UK POPs regulations, sofas can’t be treated as general waste anymore due to the materials used inside the cushions.

Once we collect your sofa, it goes through a controlled disposal process:

1. Separated from general waste
Sofas and upholstered items are kept completely separate — they cannot be mixed with standard loads.

2. Transported to a licensed specialist facility

• Can’t be compacted like normal waste�• Take up a lot of space in landfill�• Have to be handled separately at disposal sites

Once we collect your mattress, it goes through a proper process:
