Planting at Montpelier station (on the Severn Beach Line) by station volunteers

Thank you to the 3 volunteers (who also help to look after Redland station) - the plants were bought from Brackenwood Garden centre at Abbots Leigh (not far from Ashton Court and over the Clifton Suspension bridge) Website at -: https://www.brackenwoodgc.co.uk/

The staff out there are knowledgeable and helpful - plenty of plants purchased - a well deserved coup of coffee was had (with a delicious sweet treat) - the car was then packed and back to Montpelier station where we unloaded the purchases and planted them

The opportunity to refresh the metal bike racks was also done as well as the flower bed

Please take a look and keep an eye on the plants progress

Thank you to the station volunteers once again

Volunteers will keep an eye on the plants for watering, weeding etc

Thank you to GWR community grant funding for help in supplying grants and continued support and also to Severnside Community Rail Partnership for their support too

New signs for cycle racks

New signs to the cycle racks (behind the shelter) at Montpelier station have been put up recently (after a meeting with GWR station manager for the Severn Beach Line and Severnside Community Rail Partnership.

There are spaces for up to 4 bikes - there are also spaces at the metal racks (again for up to 4 bikes

Worried about security - there is a CCTVB camera in the shelter and this should cover the cycle racks

Please do NOT put you bike to the railings on the station side as there could be an official notice on it and then taken away - please use the racks provided

This is now up at Montpelier station on the community notice board (on the left hand side, just passed the canopy) -.

Both Redland & Montpelier stations have art work and have posters up

There will be an update provided by Severnside Community Rail Partnership, as the recently opened Ashley Down station has artwork (2024)

Posters will be updated as and when they are provided

Use the bar code on the posters for further information

Thank you to Severnside Community Rail Partnership for providing the poster and any updates as they arise

Rail Replacement signs updated at Montpelier station November 2025

With other station volunteers and doing some gardening work it was noted the new rail replacement signs were put up - not too sure when - but these confirm where the buses will be in lieu of trains where there is engineering work - this will or should be confirmed by bigger yellow signs confirming dates when they do have them

Three signs have been put up -:
1) By the shelter at station
2) Under the canopy - this is on arrival
3) at the top of the stairs where the bridge goes over the railway line and then further steps to Cromwell Road
4) at the top of the steps on the road at Cromwell Road after going over the bridge and railway line - that is useful (12 January 2026)

All Angles of where to rail replacement buses has been covered

To confirm when buses are running instead of trains, the rail replacement services, they leave from the bus stops outside Montpelier High School on the A38 Cheltenham Road (there is a map on each of the signs!!)

Planting in the garden area at Montpelier station - Friday 7th November 2025

Planting took place by the station volunteers after several purchases at Riverside Garden Centre Clift House Road, Southville Bristol BS3 1RX - this garden centre also has a good café.

Four variety's of tulip were planted -:
1) Floresta tulip red/white flowers
2) Red Riding Hood Tulips - with dark striped foliage
3) Guiseppe verdi tulips - yellow/orange
4) Tiny Timo tulips
All will hopefully flower in the spring

Plus one plant was planted that provides more all year round colour - called Abelia X gra "Sparkling Silver" which has medium green foliage variegated with cream. Small, pale pink and wite fragrant flowers in late summer into autumn. It also takes on pink hues in autumn and winter It gets to a height of 0.5 metres and spread of 1 metre.

There are a couple of areas that still look bare and will need planting

The all going for a well deserved tea/coffee and cake at the café in the Work Room, 10 - 12 Gloucester Road, Bishopston Bristol BS7 8AE - very good café with work space available

Buddleia and bush clearance at Montpelier station

The bushes up the steps at Montpelier station were cleared a few weeks ago (along with a lot of rubbish that had accumulated) - These bushes were overhanging the steps

The whole area looks a lot clearer now and visibility is clearer - some of the bushes are beginning to grow back

Thank you to the contractors for doing the job - we do not get told that the jobs are being done but the work is appreciated - Sometimes I do not notice they have been done!!

Help in keeping the station bright and clear is appreciated

Walk from Severn Beach to Pilning - Lunch at the Plough - then getting the parliamentary train service back from Pilning station Saturday 3rd May 2025

Ann invites you to join her on Saturday 3rd May for a walk from Severn Beach station to Pilning, followed by lunch at the Plough and then catching the afternoon ‘parliamentary train service’ from Pilning Railway station back to Temple Meads.
(A parliamentary train service nowadays means a token service to a given station, thus maintaining a legal fiction that the station is open, whereas in reality the train operating company in question has almost completely abandoned the station. These services only run at all because it is much cheaper for a train operating company to run a parliamentary service than it is to go through the full legal process of applying for a station to be permanently closed).

*Catch the 09.46 from Bristol Temple Meads to Severn Beach, arriving at 10.24. (This train is from Weston Super Mare)

*Walk is along quiet roads with only one busy road to cross – it should take about 1.5 hours.

*Lunch is at the Plough in Pilning (Pilning Street, Pilning, BS35 4JJ) – the pub opens at 12 noon and does food from 12 noon to 2 pm

*Then the short walk to Pilning station for the 15.32 departure to Bristol Temple Meads. There are no facilities at Pilning apart from a shelter
* The cost for this journey (Pilning to Temple Meads) is £5.80 without a railcard or £3.85 with a railcard - either buy tickets in advance or take a chance of buying them on the day.

For For those who do not wish or are unable to do the walk but would like to meet up for the social at the Plough – catch the number 12, Stagecoach bus from either Bristol Parkway or Severn Beach. It is an hourly service in each direction. From Bristol Parkway direction, the best stop is Swanmoor Bridge which is about a 20 minute walk from the Plough. This stop is also the best option if coming from Severn Beach direction too.

To get a rough idea of number please e-mail me on [email protected]

This is run in conjunction with Bristol Rail Campaign - and it is open to everyone

Blue directional sign to Montpelier

This is at the alleyway that goes from the station and is at the junction with St Andrews Road

BCR Street Scene Volunteers kindly cleaned this sign for the station adoption group at Montpelier - and now a nice clean railway sign to the station.

Hoping that it will stay nice and clean for a while to come

These volunteers work tirelessly helping keep the neighbourhood tag free, and more

Photos curtesy of the volunteer who did the cleaning for us - thanks to the team for doing and keeping the area clean

Walk from Ashley Down Station Saturday 11th January 2025

A walk to blow away the winter blues took place from the recently opened station at Ashley Down - the 10.03 train from Bristol Temple Meads was on time, 5 of us got of the train and one person was already there awaiting our arrival - after taking photos at the start of the station we walked towards Purdown, the Telecom tower and the gun encampments, from World War 11 - good views over both sides of Bristol - we saw the goats up on Purdown which are good for the vegetation in the area

From there we walked towards Narrow ways Junction and the bridge over the 4 railway lines and where the Severn Beach line branches off and dropping down into St Werburghs for drinks and food at the Farm pub - where we were joined by 3 others to lunch

Then a10 minute walk back along the cycle track back to Ashley Down station back to Bristol Temple Meads - again the trains were on time

Thank you to those who turned up for the walk and lunch and hopefully a good day was had by all -the weather was cold but dry with sunshine plenty of frost on the ground

Photos - thanks to Ann & Tina for photos
