DARKER NIGHTS, BRIGHTER LIGHTS – SAFETY FIRST! 🌙🚨

With the winter nights drawing in and daylight hours getting shorter, safety becomes even more important when transporting abnormal loads across the UK.
At Kings Heavy Haulage, our es**rt vehicles are fully equipped to help manage traffic and provide additional protection should we find ourselves parked up in an unlit lay-by or abnormal load bay.

Whether we're stopping for a break, awaiting movement restrictions or parked up overnight, our es**rt vehicles can be positioned to provide additional warning to approaching motorists, helping to protect our drivers, vehicles and loads.

Visibility is key! Our fully equipped es**rt vehicles, complete with high-visibility markings, amber warning beacons and traffic management equipment, help ensure we're seen when it matters most.

As the darker evenings set in, we remind all motorists to remain vigilant, reduce their speed when approaching stationary abnormal loads and give our crews plenty of room.
Safety doesn't stop when the wheels stop! 💪

From planning the route to reaching our destination, looking after our team and other road users remains our number one priority.

Sometimes the right answer is knowing when NOT to lift 🚧

Dan, one of our Approved Persons (APs), recently attended site to carry out a comprehensive survey for one of our lorry loaders, with the intention of lifting out a number of bridge parapets.

Following a detailed assessment of the site and proposed lifting operation, it was unfortunately determined that a lorry loader crane was not suitable for the task in its current configuration.

A number of factors contributed to the decision, including:

🔴 Outriggers could not be fully deployed to provide the required stability.
🔴 The lorry loader could not be positively positioned on the bridge in a suitable location for the lift.
🔴 The required lifting radius presented limitations for the proposed operation.
🔴 The weight of the parapets in relation to the achievable radius and crane capacity meant the lift could not be safely undertaken.

Rather than simply saying “it can’t be done”, Dan provided the customer with a full detailed report outlining the findings and the reasons why the proposed lifting operation was unsuitable.

At Kings, our approach is simple if the conditions aren’t right, we won’t take the risk. Safety, stability and planning come before getting the job done.

Sometimes the most important part of a lift is knowing when to put the brakes on. 💪🚧

🏗️ FROM SITE SURVEY TO SUCCESSFUL LIFT! 💪

Recently, we sent Dan, one of our APs down to Dorking to carry out a full site survey ahead of a planned lifting operation.

During the survey, we had identified overhead power cables in close proximity to the proposed lift area an important consideration that needed to be addressed before any lifting could safely take place.

Working closely with Thames Water, DTGen and National Power, our team was able to assess the site constraints, establish the necessary controls and develop a suitable and safe lift plan for the operation.

Two weeks later, Mick was on site and successfully completed the planned lifts, putting the preparation and planning into practice.

This is exactly why a thorough site survey and properly prepared lift plan are so important. Identifying potential hazards early gives everyone the opportunity to work together, find practical solutions and ensure the operation can be carried out safely and efficiently.

Plan it. Prepare it. Lift it safely.

A delivery of window stillages to a private property in Bath 🪟

With limited site access, we had to park at the bottom of the driveway and get the stillages as close to the property as possible.

Not every delivery can be an adventure! 😆

When a 70+ tonne load makes your trailer look like a banana… 🍌

Before anyone asks… YES, that bend is meant to be there! 👀

What you’re seeing here is the natural unloaded profile of the trailer. We use shims to pre-stress the trailer, deliberately putting a controlled curve into the deck.

Why? Because once the load, in this case 70+ tonnes is sitting down in the well, that weight brings everything down to where it needs to be.

➡️ Unloaded: Curved
➡️ Loaded: Flat & level
➡️ Over 70 tonnes: Doing exactly what the trailer was designed to do

So, no… the trailer isn’t broken, bent or having a bad day!

It’s all part of the engineering behind heavy haulage, where sometimes you have to put a bend in it to make it straight when it matters! 😎
