We are a volunteer-run heritage railway in Brechin, Angus. Enjoy steam and diesel train journeys, and family events along our 4 mile line to Bridge of Dun!

Every ticket supports the preservation of our railway for future generations.

-Volunteers day Saturday 13th June-

Join us on the 13th of June for our volunteer recruitment day. This is the perfect opportunity for you to come down and speak with our team of volunteers to see what it’s like to help preserve history.

We will be running trains with departures from Brechin at 11AM and 1PM, there will be time at Bridge of Dun to speak with our volunteers there and explore our station too. A trip of the train is a great chance to speak to our volunteers on the train so you can see first hand yourself what it takes to run the railway.

What’s happening and where?
In Brechin station there will be volunteers from our Steam department, Brechin station and shop teams.

At Bridge of Dun there will be volunteers from our diesel group, permanent way (track), ticket office and Bridge of Dun station staff around to speak to you about these departments.

It’s never too late to get involved and you never know what opportunities may arise from volunteering! If you can’t make this coming weekend then please email [email protected] to register your interest in volunteering.

What’s on at the Caledonian Railway in June?

Steam Sunday’s- 7th, 14th, 28th- Enjoy a step back in time to the era of steam travel and travel behind our REAL steam engine!

Diesel Saturday’s- 20th, 27th - One for you diesel cranks, ride behind one of our historic diesel engines through the Strathmore countryside to relive the swinging sixties!

Volunteer Recruitment day-13th- Come down and meet the people who run the railway! This is your opportunity to meet those who keep history alive and find out all about what it is like to volunteer at the railway. It’s never too late to get involved so if you are looking for something to fill your spare time, come and see us!

Peppa Pig visits with Fox & Edwards events- 21st- Come and meet Peppa Pig at the Caledonian Railway while being hauled by a REAL steam engine.

Fish and Chip trains- 14th, 21st, 28th - Join us again with our friends at Fox & Edwards events to enjoy fish and chips while on a journey hailed by our steam engine.

There’s plenty to see and do this month, old faces and new we would love to see you visit the Caledonian Railway.

In Brechin this weekend coming for the Angus show? Why not pop down on Saturday the 6th of June for a round trip on one of our heritage diesel locomotives. The train will depart Brechin at 1pm and return just after 2pm.

Think of it as a little warm up to our summer running season along side our afternoon tea!

Volunteer recruitment day -13th of June 2026

We are also on the lookout for Ticket office staff! These are the volunteers who are often the first point of contact with our customers when they
arrive at our station. Our friendly volunteers provide our customers with information about the railway and sell tickets for our events which are taking place. Volunteer recruitment day -13th of June 2026. Our first volunteer opportunity we would like to highlight is the stations themselves! This can involve station management, general upkeep and renovations of our historic stations, ensuring they retain their charm for our visitors. There is also plenty gardening to do in the stations to keep them looking like their best. If you enjoy a spot of cleaning, painting and general maintenance or to even help in planning the next steps in the upkeep of the station, this could be for you! It’s two weeks to go until our popular afternoon tea train returns with our lovely ladies at The Whistle Stop .

The train will be hauled by one of our historic diesel engines through the very scenic Strathmore countryside. Get your tickets below!⬇️

On Saturday 13th of June join us for our volunteer recruitment day!

You will be able to meet and chat with our volunteers across various areas of the railway. Some of these areas are:
-Steam
-Coaches
-Permanent way (track and infrastructure)
-Stations
-Events
-Diesels
As well as many more!

We will be running train services to showcase all areas of the railway, a timetable will be released closer to the time.

What is required to volunteer at the Caledonian railway?
-Being enthusiastic
-Be willing to learn new skills
-Wanting to help preserve history
-No previous experience required!

What can you get out of volunteering with us?
-Experience with tasks you may never have considered being involved with before as well as learning new skills
-Becoming part of a close knit team who are social within and outwith the railway
-The satisfaction of keeping the Caledonian Railway alive and so so much more.

The very useful engine returns to Brechin on 25th/26th July and 29th/30th August! Our tickets are now on sale. It is the ideal day out for all from far and wide.

Visiting us for the Gruffalo or Fish and Chip trains this weekend?

Why not pop in to the lovely Lorraine and Wendy at The Whistle Stop located on platform 1 at Brechin station. There will be a selection of hot food, cold food, warm drinks (to keep the wind chill at bay) and cold drinks available as well as their famous home baking. It usually goes down a treat with the volunteers!

Open 10am to 3pm. We hope you enjoy!
