If you’re ever in the Bologna area, do yourself a favour and take a day trip to Ferrara and Comacchio.
Ferrara has a massive castle with a moat. A proper moat. The kind that makes you wonder why we stopped putting them around things.
Then there’s Comacchio, a beautiful little canal town often called “Little Venice”. Same charm, far fewer people trying to take the exact same photo.
It’s easy to do both in a day: train from Bologna to Ferrara, then hop on the 330 or 331 bus to Comacchio.
Castles, canals, good food and no crowds.
As a result of this trip down memory lane, I’ve somehow managed to book return flights to Bologna in September for £50. I was only trying to remember a nice day out. Next thing I knew, Ryanair had my card details and I had a boarding pass.
