We are a registered charity that enables local people with disabilities to go sailing on Windermere. We are inspected by the RYA each year.

We take both groups and individuals from April - October each year. We sail regularly on Windermere at times to suit participating groups and individuals. Beginners are welcome, as are their carers and rela

tives. We now have a range of boats to cater for a broad range of abilities. Lifejackets and protective clothing will be provided. We work closely with other special needs agencies in the area who usually provide the care support and transport for our sailing members. Our activities have recently included, as well as sailing; canoeing, camping, activity holidays and walking - through the winter months. Our sailing base has good vehicle access and a winch for wheelchair users mounted on a wide, accessible floating pontoon. We have a large team of friendly volunteers on hand to support all our visitors and to help ensure they receive the best possible experience. We do not charge for our sessions, though most participants are able to give a donation in the region of £5 in order to help keep us afloat. We are reliant on our team of volunteers to enable us to operate, so we are always on the lookout for volunteers to join our team and get involved. Blackwell Sailing is supported by RYA Sailability and is a recognised RYA Training Centre. We largely rely on donations. If you would like to make a donation you can do so on our website

Wow, we've been back on the water for a month now, how time flies when you're having fun! Lots of groups and individuals have been along to enjoy sailing with us already. Along with our pre season instructor training days.
The Cumbria weather has given us a mixed bag of conditions, but come rain or shine, we always enjoy our sessions out on Windermere.

Our maintenance team are doing a great job over the winter months, ensuring our boats are ready for the coming season.
This year we have partnered with Kendal Day Service, to enable service users to come and help with some of the maintenance tasks. They have been learning how to prep surfaces, paint and stain the woodwork and clean and polish the hulls.

Here are some photos looking back at our 2024 season. We had a great year providing activities for around 200 local people with disabilities, along with their families and carers.
We are busy preparing for 2025, if you are a group or individual thinking about trying sailing, or wanting to return again this year, please do get in touch.

Thank you to all or supporters and volunteers who enable local people with disabilities the chance to enjoy the beautiful outdoors we have on our doorstep.

Today we had a visit from representatives of the new Spar in Bowness, who have generously made a donation to Blackwell Sailing. They were interested to see what we get up to and do some filming. They even got a ride in our rescue boat!

We had a lovely visit from the High Sheriff Chris Holmes and his wife Sue this week. Accompanied by Chris and Patrick from Cumbria Community Foundation, who have supported Blackwell for many years.
We took them for a sail along with one of our regular groups, Whinfell, from Kendal Day Service.
It was a great chance to showcase what our charity does for local people with disabilities.
Lovely sail and lovely weather for a change!
