Coach vs HGV — Why the Out of Scope Rules Are Completely Different

A question that comes up more than you'd think — why can a coach go out of scope, but an HGV can't?

Under GB domestic rules, a coach operating within 50 kilometres of its base can be taken out of scope entirely. No EU rules. No tachograph record required for that journey. It's a legitimate exemption that many PSV drivers use regularly.

For HGV drivers it's a different story. Any goods vehicle over 3.5 tonnes carrying goods on UK roads falls under assimilated rules — full stop. The 50km exemption doesn't apply. The only situations where an HGV can legitimately use OUT mode are when the vehicle is going in for service, or when the use is genuinely private — and private doesn't mean driving home after a shift.

Same tachograph fitted to both vehicles. Very different rules depending on which seat you're sitting in.

Recovery drivers — do you really understand the 100km tachograph rule?

There is a specific exemption for vehicles mainly used for specialised breakdown work when operating within a 100km radius of their base.

But there are important details many drivers and recovery operators may not know.

The 100km is measured from where the vehicle is normally kept — and if you know you're going to exceed that radius, the rules can change.

Tachograph OUT Mode — When Should You Actually Use It?

One of the most misunderstood buttons on a digital tachograph — the OUT mode.

Most drivers assume OUT is just another way of saying "I'm on a break." It isn't. OUT mode is specifically for situations where the vehicle is off the road for service, or where no commercial transport is being carried out. It tells the system — and DVSA — that the tachograph rules simply don't
apply at that moment.

When you finish your shift and leave the cab, the correct sequence is to switch to REST first — then press OUT. Not the other way around.

Use OUT in the wrong situation and it doesn't just look like a mistake. It shows up as a tachograph infringement — and that can follow you into a roadside check or a compliance investigation.

Know your modes. The tachograph is your legal record. Get it right every time.

HGV Drivers Keep the UK Running — So Why Does the Average Pay Tell a Different Story?

The average HGV driver salary in the UK in 2026 is £33,000 a year.

A Tesco store manager earns between £35,000 and £45,000. No licence required. No nights away. No 44-tonne vehicle to bring home safely at the end of a thirteen-hour shift.

An HGV driver paid for their own licence — up to £3,500 out of their own pocket. They are responsible for the load, the vehicle, and the road every single time they leave the yard. They keep supermarket shelves stocked, construction sites running, and fuel in the pumps.

And yet the average pay puts them below the national conversation about skilled work.

To be fair — experienced Class 1 drivers on specialist routes can earn £50,000 and above. But that takes years. And most drivers aren't there yet.

If you're running cross-Channel freight this summer — read this.

The Port of Dover has officially warned that HGV drivers could face serious delays over the coming weeks, caused not by their own border checks, but by tourist traffic backing up on the approaches to the port. Most drivers leaving the UK through Dover hold European passports and don't need EES biometric registration — but their vehicles could still get caught in wider congestion if passenger traffic spills back onto the M20.

During the May bank holiday, Dover handled a peak of 8,500 tourist cars in a single day, with delays of up to 4.5 hours. This summer, daily volumes can regularly exceed 12,000 vehicles — and the EES kiosk facility built to handle the load is still not operational.

Dover handles around a third of all UK trade in goods with the EU — medicines, fresh food, automotive parts. Time-sensitive freight that cannot simply be rerouted.

Concerns has been raised that stricter enforcement of the 90/180-day rule is already hitting UK operators, with some firms running into difficulties on regular EU runs.

Why HGV Drivers Walk Away — And Why the Industry Won't Fix It

Most people assume HGV drivers leave for better pay elsewhere. The reality is more complicated than that.

The majority of drivers quit the profession before they turn 45. Not at retirement age. Before 45. And the reasons come up again and again — nights away from family, no fixed routine, nowhere decent to park, nowhere to eat, tight delivery windows, and the feeling that nobody in the supply chain actually values the person behind the wheel.

Over a third of UK transport businesses say existing drivers leaving the industry entirely is one of their biggest problems. Not moving to a competitor. Leaving. For good.

The industry talks about a driver shortage. But the real problem has always been retention. Until that changes — the shortage won't either.

Driver CPC in 2026 — Legal Requirement or Waste of Money?

Every professional HGV driver in the UK must hold a valid Driver CPC. No exceptions.

Five modules. Thirty-five hours of training every five years. Costs vary wildly — from as little as £32.50 per session with some providers, to £125 or more with others. Some employers cover it. Many don't.

And the quality? That's where drivers get frustrated. Some courses are genuinely useful — road safety, fuel efficiency, tachograph compliance. Others? Tick-box exercises that nobody takes seriously.

But here's the reality. Let your DQC card lapse and you cannot drive commercially. DVSA can check it roadside. Employers check it before they hire you. And driving without it carries a fine of up to £1,000.

Worth it? You don't really have a choice. But is the system fit for purpose?

Why Class 1 Drivers Earn £38k or £55k — Same Licence, Different World

Same Class 1 licence. Completely different pay packet. Here's what actually makes the difference.

Standard Class 1 rates run from £38,000 to £50,000 a year — but experienced drivers on specialist or night trunk routes regularly hit £45,000 to £55,000 and above. The gap isn't random. It comes down to three things: sector, shift pattern, and experience.

Specialist certifications like ADR, HIAB, and tanker experience all command above-standard rates — and the supply of drivers with these skills is limited. Supermarket trunking pays the floor. Tankers and chemicals pay the ceiling.

Drivers with under three years of experience average around £24,400 a year. Mid-career drivers average £30,800. Those with ten to twenty years of experience average £39,500.

Nights and weekends push it further still. Know your worth — and find the sector that rewards it.

Van Drivers Crossing Into Europe After July 2026 — What You Must Have

From 1 July 2026, the rules changed for van drivers operating internationally.

If your van is over 2.5 tonnes and you're crossing into Europe for hire and reward work — you now need a Smart Tachograph 2 fitted and a driver card in at all times. No exceptions.

Get stopped at a roadside check without one in the UK and you're looking at a fine of up to £300. Cross into Europe without it and some countries will hit you with fines exceeding €2,000 — and immobilise the vehicle on the spot until it's compliant.

This isn't just a driver issue. Operators who run non-compliant vans on international routes risk their operator licence too.
