There are plenty of beautiful hotels in Crete.

But very few have a story quite like Amirandes.

When Grecotel created the resort, they took inspiration from the great Minoan palaces that once stood on the island thousands of years ago. The architecture, water features, courtyards and symmetry all quietly reflect Crete’s ancient history.

You can see it in the lagoon that runs through the heart of the resort. You can see it in the stonework, the arches and the way the whole place feels.

What I love about hotels like this is that they feel connected to where they are.

You could build a luxury resort anywhere in the world. But Amirandes feels unmistakably Cretan.

It’s one of those hotels where the location is part of the experience, not just the backdrop.

And to be fair, that’s usually what makes a hotel memorable long after you’ve come home.

Trying to agree on a family holiday in our house is ridiculous 🤣

Ben wants to hire a car and disappear into the American national parks for six weeks. The more remote, the better.

Ethan is desperate to go to Japan. Every holiday conversation somehow ends up back there. Tokyo. Kyoto. Osaka. Noodles. Repeat.

Jason couldn’t care less where we go as long as there’s a water park.

Lydia’s requirements are even simpler:

* Swimming pool
* Ice cream
* Kids’ disco

That’s the entire brief.

And me?

I’d happily go to Lanzarote for some sun, Capri for a few days wandering around eating pasta, or Vietnam for a proper adventure.

So when people tell me they can’t agree on a holiday, I get it.

Because most families aren’t trying to choose one holiday.

They’re trying to choose between five completely different holidays!

The funny thing is, the best family trips usually aren’t the ones where everyone gets exactly what they want.

They’re the ones where everyone gets enough of what they want.

Although if somebody can find me a hotel with a water park, Japanese food, a kids’ disco, views like Yosemite and an Italian piazza around the corner, please let me know 🤣

It would save us a lot of time.

What is the one thing your family absolutely has to have on holiday?

10/06/2026

There’s something about that first evening in Japan.

You’ve probably been travelling for hours. You’re tired, slightly confused about what day it is, and your body clock is having a complete meltdown.

Then you step outside.

Neon lights everywhere. Tiny restaurants tucked down side streets. Vending machines on every corner. The smell of ramen drifting through the air. People rushing home from work while you’re standing there thinking, “I can’t believe I’m actually here.”

I always think your first evening tells you a lot about a destination, and Japan has a habit of grabbing hold of you from the very beginning.

Whether it’s Tokyo, Osaka or Kyoto, that first wander before bed is usually the moment people realise this trip is going to be something special.

🇯🇵 Have you been to Japan, or is it still on your list?

When people talk about Andalusia, it’s usually Seville, Granada and Málaga that get all the attention.

CĂłrdoba often gets overlooked.

Which is a shame because if I was already visiting Seville, I’d absolutely make time for it.

The star of the show is the Mezquita.

It’s one of those places that’s genuinely difficult to describe until you’re standing inside it. The scale is incredible and it feels completely different to anywhere else I’ve visited in Europe.

Outside of that, CĂłrdoba is exactly the sort of city I enjoy wandering around with no real plan.

Beautiful streets, hidden courtyards, plenty of places to stop for food and a much more relaxed feel than some of Spain’s busier cities.

The best part?

It’s only around 45 minutes from Seville by train, making it one of the easiest additions to an Andalusia itinerary.

If I was planning a trip, I’d probably combine:

📍 Seville
📍 Córdoba
📍 Granada

A combination that’s very difficult to beat.

Have you visited CĂłrdoba, or is it still on your list?

I love the Maldives.

But if somebody told me they wanted incredible beaches, beautiful hotels and water that looks like it’s been edited, yet they also wanted a bit more to do, I’d probably start talking about the Seychelles.

For me, the biggest difference is variety.

In the Maldives, you’re usually choosing one island and staying put.

In the Seychelles, you can split your stay between islands and each one feels quite different.

🏝️ Mahé for mountains, beaches and luxury resorts

🏝️ Praslin for some of the best beaches in the world

🏝️ La Digue for a slower pace and those famous granite boulders

You still get the stunning scenery and incredible hotels, but with a bit more freedom to explore.

That’s why I often find the decision comes down to one question:

Do you want one beautiful island…

Or three?

Every time I open TikTok lately, Palawan seems to appear again 🤣

And to be fair, this is one of those rare occasions where social media isn’t actually overselling something!

The videos are usually the same sort of thing: bright turquoise water, limestone islands, tiny boats weaving through lagoons, and some daredevil jumping into water that genuinely doesn’t look real.

What the videos don’t always show is that Palawan isn’t really a “sit on the beach for a week” kind of destination - there’s actually a lot more to it!

People usually go for the island hopping, snorkelling, diving and exploring.

Places like El Nido and Coron are definitely the stars of the show, and they’re the sort of places people often talk about years after they’ve been.

I also think part of the appeal is that it still feels a little more adventurous than some of the other destinations that dominate social media.

It takes a bit more effort to get there.

You don’t go because somebody found a cheap package online.

You go because you’ve specifically decided you want to see it.

And when you look at the scenery, it’s not hard to understand why.

This is one destination that’s moved a long way up my own wish list.

Would you choose Palawan, or is there somewhere else currently taking over your social media feed?

I was thinking about this recently because very few people wake up one morning and suddenly decide to book a holiday.

Usually it’s been sitting there in the background for months. Sometimes years.

It might be the Japan videos they’ve been watching for ages.

The safari photos they keep stopping to look at.

The cruise route they’ve quietly researched three or four times.

The hotel they’ve saved on Instagram and keep going back to.

Sometimes people enquire about a holiday they’ve already chosen in their head without quite realising it.

They’ve been imagining themselves there for so long that the decision was pretty much made before we ever spoke.

I see it all the time.

The enquiry is often just the point where someone finally decides it’s time to make it happen.

So I’m curious…

What’s the trip that’s been living rent-free in your head recently?

I’ve looked at a lot of hotels over the years, but every now and then one makes me stop and think, “Well that’s a bit different.”

Cape Sounio is one of those.

The hotel sits on the Athens Riviera, looking directly across to the Temple of Poseidon. Not a replica. Not a themed restaurant. An actual ancient Greek temple that’s been standing there for around 2,500 years.

To be honest, most hotels talk about their views. Sea views. Mountain views. Sunset views.

This one has a view of ancient history, and when there’s a full moon the views are even more spectacular.

What I love about it is that the setting isn’t just something you look at from a distance. The whole resort has been designed to blend into the landscape, with bungalows and villas tucked amongst pine trees and olive groves, all looking out towards the Aegean Sea.

The private beach is beautiful, many of the rooms have their own pools, and despite being only around an hour from Athens, it feels a world away from the city.

It’s also one of those rare hotels that works for lots of different types of trips. A few nights after exploring Athens. A special anniversary. A honeymoon. Or simply a week somewhere that feels a little more unique than the usual beach holiday.

I can just imagine sitting on a terrace as the sun goes down and the Temple of Poseidon starts to glow in the distance. It must be one of those places where you find yourself staring at the view far more than your phone.

People often think of Greece and immediately picture Santorini or Mykonos.

But sometimes it’s the places with a story behind them that stay with you the longest.

What’s the most memorable hotel location you’ve ever stayed in?

If food was the only thing I was judging a cruise on, I’d probably pick Oceania Cruises.

There are some incredible restaurants across plenty of cruise lines, but Oceania has built a huge part of its reputation around its dining. In fact, it’s often described as having some of the best food at sea.

What I like is that it doesn’t feel like you’re eating in a “cruise restaurant”. It feels much more like dining in a collection of good restaurants that just happen to be on a ship.

A few things that stand out:

* Multiple speciality restaurants included in the fare
* Excellent steak and seafood
* Properly good Italian at Toscana
* French cuisine at Jacques
* Fresh ingredients and made-to-order dishes
* Smaller ships, so dining feels more relaxed and less busy

Of course, food is incredibly personal. Some people would choose Regent Seven Seas Cruises, others swear by Silversea Cruises or Seabourn Cruise Line.

But if a client told me:

“I love food, I enjoy trying different restaurants, and I want dining to be one of the highlights of the trip…”

Oceania would be very near the top of my list.

Which cruise line has served the best meal you’ve ever had at sea?
