Then & Now βœˆοΈπŸ“Έ

Our Air Traffic Control Tower has been watching over Blackpool Airport since day one and while plenty has changed around it, the tower itself still stands proudly in the very same location today.

The three images show its story across the decades with the earliest believed to be from the 1940s, a second black and white photograph from the 1970s and a recent image showing the tower as it stands today. Together, they highlight just how recognisable this landmark has remained through the years.

From wartime activity and vintage airliners to modern business jets and helicopter operations, this tower has witnessed generations of aviation history unfold right outside its windows.

If buildings could talk, this one would have quite the story to tell πŸ‘€

Airport Visitor ✈️

Earlier this month our Spitfire Visitor Centre welcomed the incredible Spitfire T9 two-seater β€œGrey Nurse” to Blackpool Airport for a series of unforgettable coastal experience flights.

Passengers enjoyed tailored flights taking in the stunning views of the Fylde Coast, the Forest of Bowland and the Lake District with aerobatics available for those wanting the full thrill of flying in this iconic aircraft.

β€œGrey Nurse” is becoming a regular visitor to the airport and our ATC team were even invited to take a look around the cockpit

Thanks to Al from ATC for these stunning pictures πŸ“Έ

Following yesterday morning’s lightning strikes and the resulting equipment failures, Blackpool Airport is now fully operational again.

A huge thank you to our ATE team for their swift actions, professionalism and resourcefulness throughout the day in helping restore operations as quickly as possible. We’d also like to thank Dewhurst and ATG for getting onsite so quickly to support the recovery effort.

Finally, thank you to all airport users and operators for your patience and understanding while works were carried out.

πŸ“βœˆοΈ Airport Update βœˆοΈπŸ“

Due to a lightning strike, we are currently only open for scheduled movements and emergency VFR services until further notice.

Please bear with us while we get everything back up and running as quickly as possible.

A lightning strike on the runway and air traffic control tower early this morning caused multiple equipment failures.

For updates, please check NOTAMS, emails and Instagram stories.

Thank you for your understanding.

This month in our Airport ABC series we’re looking at ICAO Rescue and Fire Fighting Categories (RFF) πŸš’πŸ”₯

RFF Categories are the international standard used to define the level of fire and rescue protection required at an airport. They are set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation and determine how many fire appliances, personnel and extinguishing agents must be available on site.

At Blackpool Airport we operate at RFF Category 4, with the ability to increase up to categories 5 and 6 with prior notice to support the growing number of larger visiting aircraft

Why RFF Categories matter:
πŸš’ Aircraft size – larger aircraft require a higher fire category due to fuel load and passenger capacity
⏱️ Rapid response – strict time requirements ensure fire crews can reach any incident quickly
🧯 Specialist equipment – determines the type and amount of firefighting media available on the airfield
πŸ‘¨β€πŸš’ Trained personnel – ensures the right level of firefighter training and readiness
✈️ Operational safety – allows different aircraft types to use the airport safely within defined limits

RFF Categories are a key part of keeping aviation operations regulated and consistent worldwide 🌍

It’s grass cutting season once again πŸ€πŸŒ±

What might look like routine maintenance is actually a key part of keeping the airfield compliant and fully operational.

Throughout the growing season our Fire and Operations teams are out on the airfield managing grass growth for several important reasons:

πŸ‘€ Maintaining visibility
Short, well-maintained grass is however applied on taxiway and runway edges to ensure critical signage and lighting is always visible.

βœ… Regulatory compliance
Blackpool Airport ensures that CAA Regulations (CAP 772 Wildlife hazard management at aerodromes) are strictly applied which also includes the management of grass on the airfield

🐦 Managing wildlife risk
If grass on the airfield is not managed correctly, it provides a habitat which attracts birds onto the airfield which can pose a serious hazard to aircraft during take-off and landing.

At Blackpool Airport we maintain what is known as a long grass policy which ensures the grass length is between 220-300 mm.

If the grass was longer than 300mm it would provide cover and protection for birds to settle and use the airport for breeding and nesting. Alternatively, if the grass was shorter than 220mm, it would also attract birds as it would allow access to natural food sources such as insects, worms and seeds.

πŸ’™ Supplier appreciation post πŸ’™

A big thank you to Lancashire Bird Control πŸ¦… for their continued support with our bird scaring programme.

Their falconry response service uses trained birds of prey to naturally deter gulls, pigeons, geese and other species from the airfield, which is vital for reducing risk to aircraft and maintaining a safe operating environment.

This proven method creates a lasting change in bird behaviour and is both highly effective and humane.

Beyond airports, Lancashire Bird Control also support a wide range of sites including schools, hospitals, retail parks, warehouses, industrial sites, transport hubs and landfill locations πŸ’πŸš‰πŸ

Today we reflect on 8 May 1945, which marked the end of the Second World War in Europe πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

It was a defining moment in modern history and, in Blackpool, this legacy is closely tied to the role of Blackpool Airport, known during the war as RAF Squires Gate.

Throughout World War II, the airfield served as an important RAF training base specialising in the preparation of aircrew including navigators, radio operators and air gunners. These roles were essential to operational success across Bomber Command and Coastal Command.

The airport’s role was closely connected to the wider town of Blackpool, which was transformed during the war into one of the country’s largest centres for military accommodation and training. Hotels, guesthouses, and civic buildings were repurposed to house and support thousands of service personnel.

Blackpool’s streets, promenade and landmarks became part of daily wartime life and despite the pressures of war, the town also provided moments of rest and entertainment that helped sustain morale.

When VE Day arrived on 8 May 1945, Blackpool joined the nation in celebration πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ πŸŽ‰

Blackpool filled with crowds as news of victory spread. There was joy, relief, music and dancing alongside deep reflection and remembrance for those who had not returned.

Today, we acknowledge the contribution of RAF Squires Gate and all those who trained and served here as well as the wider Blackpool community that supported the war effort in such a significant way πŸ’—
