Vintage Trains puts genuine steam and diesel locomotives out on the mainline, running at speed alongside modern services the length and breadth of the country. Carriages are wood panelled with properly upholstered seats, built to a standard of comfort you will not find on the railway today.

Every locomotive is restored by hand and kept running by people who understand the engineering inside it, which is why journeys still carry the sound of the engine working, the smell of coal and oil, and the scale of real machinery doing real work.

And onboard, you get to make the journey the experience itself. That's not something you can say about modern travel today. That's why, at Vintage Trains, we celebrate it!

On Saturday 5 September, the Cambrian Coast Express takes on the run to Aberystwyth with a pair of diesel locomotives (one pictured right here) working together the whole way from Shrewsbury, tackling one of the most demanding climbs on the railway before dropping down to the sea.

After crossing the Welsh Marches and into central Wales, you'll arrive into Aberystwyth with over five hours free to explore. Ride the Cliff Railway up Constitution Hill for views across Cardigan Bay, walk the promenade, take in the castle ruins, or spend an hour in the Ceredigion Museum, free to all Vintage Trains passengers.

Fish and chips on the prom rounds it off nicely before the journey home, don't you think?

BEHIND THE SCENES

There's always so much that goes on behind the scenes on a Vintage Trains journey. From the hardworking firemen shovelling coal all day long, to the amazing work done by our volunteers to give our passengers a day to remember - it's all about the people and their love for what they do.

We still have one more weekend for the summer series of the Shakespeare Express, and then it's time for us to once again venture further afield with journeys up-and-down the country all scheduled throughout September.

Check out our upcoming journeys by visiting our website. Link in the bio!

The Shakespeare Express returns to Derby on 25 October and Worcester on 8 November, hauled by one of the historic locomotives that once worked these very same lines.

Derby departures call at Burton-on-Trent, Tamworth and Coleshill Parkway, while Worcester departures call at Droitwich Spa and Stourbridge Junction. Both journeys wind through the Warwickshire countryside to Stratford-upon-Avon, where you'll have four hours to wander the riverside, browse the shops, or step into Shakespeare's birthplace before the train carries you home.

Standard Class is most affordable (especially for this kind of experience), and you still get all the same experience of steam travel, with a buffet car for drinks and snacks to boot. Pullman Class adds a dining experience, featuring a full English breakfast on the way out and afternoon tea on the way back, both served to your seat.

(Don't forget, there are still two departures left in our summer series of Shakespeare Express journeys, too: Sunday 23 August and Sunday 30 August!)

Don't miss these departures. Book now!

We're excited to tell you that Vintage Trains is welcoming a new locomotive to the fleet!

LMS No.13268, the Stanier Mogul, is joining us through a partnership with the Severn Valley Railway and the Stanier Mogul Fund, the charity that has cared for the locomotive since rescuing it from a scrapyard in south Wales back in 1973.

Built in 1934, No.13268 is the only one of its type still in existence and, after decades of restoration and years of service on the Severn Valley Railway, it's now heading out onto the national network with us.

We're hopeful it will haul the Worcester Shakespeare Express on 8 November, its first outing with Vintage Trains. More details to follow as the date approaches.

The Shakespeare Express goes on! Network Rail's steam ban might still be in place, due to the current heat, but our series of amazing Sunday trips between Birmingham and Stratford-upon-Avon continues.

This Sunday, our historic diesel locomotive 37240 will pick up the mantle and will run between Birmingham and Stratford-upon-Avon on the mainline, exactly as planned. This is a great chance to see one of our impressive diesel fleet earning its keep.

Dining options in First Class get the same great quality of service and food, while Standard Class travellers can still head to our well-stocked buffet car for snacks and drinks throughout.

Vintage Trains heads north to Edinburgh this November, which is our first journey into Scotland in 14 years, and Tornado is joining us for the ride.

The Cathedrals Express departs Birmingham on Saturday 14 November, running diesel hauled up through the East Midlands to Yorkshire and the North East. At Darlington, Tornado takes over. Built in 2008 as a brand new addition to the LNER Peppercorn A1 class, Tornado is one of the few steam locomotives in the country cleared to run at full main line speed, and she'll prove it on the sprint up the East Coast Main Line, through Northumberland and across the border into Scotland.

When you arrive in Edinburgh you'll have some time to explore the castle, the Georgian streets and the Christmas Market, which opens the very day you travel.

Standard, First Class and Pullman Dining seats are available, with tickets starting from £90.10pp.
