Thank you to everyone who joined us at Tyseley Locomotive Works today for our stakeholder engagement day, with Flying Scotsman on display and an open carriage coupled behind her.

Throughout the day, groups of CBS members and invited guests made their way through the carriage shed to the carriage for tea and cake. From there they climbed up onto Flying Scotsman’s footplate through the tender, with our volunteers alongside them, before finishing at the workshop door, where they could see where our engineers look after the locomotives between trips on the main line.

Days like this are a chance to say thank you in person to the members and partners whose support keeps Vintage Trains running on the main line, and to show a little of the work that goes on here. Our thanks go to everyone who came, and to the volunteers and staff who looked after our guests from the first session to the last.

We’re hiring two engineers to join the team at Tyseley Locomotive Works in Birmingham, where the locomotives and carriages behind every Vintage Trains journey are maintained, overhauled and restored.

The first role is a Fitter/Machinist, working on our steam and heritage diesel locomotives through routine maintenance, heavy overhauls and restoration projects. You’ll be diagnosing faults, machining and refurbishing components and fitting them to tight tolerances, so strong manual machining skills and experience as a mechanical fitter or machinist are essential.

The second is a Carriage Fitter, keeping our heritage carriages safe, reliable and looking their best. The work covers running gear, brakes, suspension, couplings, doors and gangways, and suits someone with experience as a carriage fitter, mechanical fitter or rolling stock technician.

You don’t need to have worked on the railway before. Experience in heavy engineering, marine, power generation, automotive or plant brings the right skills for both roles.

They're not wrong...

There really is something special about a Vintage Trains' journey. And, if you're in the Stratford-upon-Avon area on either 25 October or 8 November, you can give it a try by joining one of our signature experiences, the Shakespeare Express!

Think wood panelled carriages, comfortably upholstered seats and a heritage locomotive at the front of the train. Leaving Stratford-upon-Avon at 1.35pm, passengers will travel through the Warwickshire countryside to Birmingham and back, meaning this one is all about the onboard experience.

At Birmingham, the locomotive moves to the other end of the train for the journey home, so there's time on the platform to watch it happen and take a few photographs.

The Polar Express Train Ride returns to Birmingham Moor Street from 22 November to 23 December, with our team operating the train.

On board there are live performances through the carriages, chefs serving hot chocolate and a festive cookie, a Golden Ticket for every guest, a visit from Santa and a silver sleigh bell to take home.

Classic tickets start from £63, and adults and children pay the same price (Exc. under twos at £5 when sitting on adult's lap.)

The Heritage Railway Association, the Severn Valley Railway and Vintage Trains are coming together on Monday 2 November to run The Volunteer, a special steam train marking 75 years of heritage railways and the volunteers whose time and skill made them possible.

Clun Castle will haul the train from Birmingham Snow Hill at 11.30am, and after journeying via Stratford-upon-Avon it's onto the Severn Valley Railway.

There's a stop at Highley to visit the Engine House museum before the train carries on to Bridgnorth, and you'll be back at Snow Hill at around 8.30pm.

The train runs on a not for profit basis, with the HRA and SVR waiving their costs and Vintage Trains covering only the direct cost of operating it.

Tickets start from £100, and First Class seats and reserved compartments are available with catering and afternoon tea.

We're heading to York on Wednesday 2 December with The Christmas White Rose. Running from Birmingham and back the same day, the train will be hauled by one of our Castle Class steam locomotives, and will give you time to take in the city's wonderfully festive Christmas Market.

Visit Stonegate and the Shambles, and head on to see the Minster or walk a stretch of the city walls. On board, Standard Class has big picture windows and a buffet car, while you can pre-order bacon rolls and afternoon tea in advance. First Class includes bacon rolls and pastries served to your seat on the way up and a festive afternoon tea coming back, and in Pullman it's a full English going north and a four course Christmas dinner on the way home.

JUST A SNAPSHOT

On Saturday Tornado leaves Birmingham fronting the Great Northern, working through to Carlisle over the Settle and Carlisle line.

The route climbs to Ais Gill, the highest summit on any main line in England, before dropping into the Eden Valley. And get this: This year marks 150 years since passenger trains first ran over it.

Tornado is a Peppercorn A1 Pacific, built new to the original 1948 design and completed in 2008. On Saturday it works the line the way its predecessors did, hauling every mile from Birmingham to Carlisle and back unassisted.

Onboard, the carriages are wood panelled with deep, comfortably upholstered seats. For those travelling with a dining ticket, food is served to your seat. For the rest, there will be a well-stocked buffet car with snacks, drinks and alcoholic beverages.

This is one not to be missed!
