I wanted to share an experience from today, along with some general points that may be useful to customers and removal operators.
Some businesses advertise removal services and then arrange for another, independent removal company to carry out the work. That arrangement is not necessarily improper, but customers may wish to confirm who will actually be responsible for their move, and removal operators should make sure they understand any referral fees or other commercial terms before accepting work.
Today, I received an enquiry for what, in my view, appeared to be a substantial ๐๐๐ผ-๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ ๐บ๐ผ๐๐ฒ, involving full packing and unpacking, furniture dismantling and reassembly, and multiple staff and vehicles.
I wonโt identify the business involved. The proposed referral commission was ๐ฏ๐ฏ% ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐๐ฎ๐น ๐ท๐ผ๐ฏ ๐๐ฎ๐น๐๐ฒ. For illustration, on a ยฃ3,000 move, that would amount to ยฃ990 before the company carrying out the work had paid its own labour, vehicles, fuel, packing materials, insurance and other operating costs.
Those figures are based on the specific enquiry I received and are not intended to suggest that all referral arrangements operate in this way.
I offered a fixed referral fee instead, but that proposal was not accepted, so I decided the job was not commercially suitable for us. That was a business decision based on the terms presented, rather than a criticism of every intermediary or referral-based business.

Before committing, consider carrying out appropriate checks and asking clear questions. Make sure the scope of work, pricing, responsibilities and practical arrangements are understood. If the job cannot be properly assessed or resourced, declining it may be the most sensible decision.
