During the coronavirus lockdown, the country’s lifestyle changed – and so did the nature of the waste generated. Waste management firms had to adapt rapidly to an environment that created both challenges and opportunities. We explore the trends across our portfolio of companies in the waste sector during lockdown and beyond.

More people at home means more household waste!

We would like to encourage recycling LDPE and cardboard materials as our warehouse is still fully operating during second lockdown.

Britain still fails to recycle almost all of its plastic waste but a major government initiative means that could change over the next four years

Until now the UK has struggled to recycle plastic waste but that could soon change. In 2014, Britain produced 4.9 million tonnes of plastic waste. Two-thirds of it (67pc) was packaging and only 1.2 million tonnes (24pc) of that waste was recycled, according to a report last year by the World Wildlife Fund.

The WWF estimates that since then the situation has improved only slightly, with the nation perhaps recycling a little under a third of its waste.

However, things should improve over the next four years, says Dr Adam Read, director of external affairs at Suez Recycling & Recovery UK, a waste management company in Maidenhead, Berkshire. “You’ve got heightened public awareness like we’ve never seen before.”

Plastic is one of the most popular and useful materials of modern times: we now use about 20 times more plastic than we did 50 years ago. Its popularity and widespread use is why handling it responsibly and correctly once it becomes waste is so vitally important. We can optimise the lifespan of plastics by re-using and recycling items as many times as possible.

Did you know?

99% of all UK local authorities now offer collection facilities for plastic bottles either through your household recycling collection or at recycling centres.

What about other plastics?

Mixed plastics packaging (trays, tubs, pots, films etc) can also be mechanically recycled, and it is both economically and environmentally effective to do so. Infrastructure for the collection, sorting and reprocessing of these valuable resources has increased in the UK in recent years.

Currently, 79% of councils collect other rigid plastic packaging such as pots, tubs and trays in household recycling collections.

06/10/2020

The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the use of plastic medical and protective equipment, such as single-use gloves, masks and aprons. Much of this equipment must be discarded after use to limit the spread of the virus.

But demand for plastic packaging has also spiked in the retail sector, as customers wary of catching the virus shun loose products. Elsewhere, people are using antibacterial wipes and bottles of hand sanitiser at a rapid rate, with some worrying that discarded “COVID waste” could soon outnumber jellyfish in the Mediterranean Sea.

The market for plastic packaging is projected to grow by 5.5% in 2020, causing a surge in the amount of waste being sent for recycling. But just when its services are needed more than ever, the recycling industry has been rocked by crises.

What is recycling?

When something is recycled it is reused or turned into something else. Materials such as glass, metal and paper are quite easy to recycle and certain types of plastic are too.

Objects that aren’t recycled, such as things that go in the rubbish, are taken to landfill sites. These are places where rubbish gets buried and left to rot away and biodegrade.
