Do you track your vacation spending in real time — or does the credit card bill at the end do it for you?

There's nothing I hate more than coming home and waiting for the credit card bill to come after a trip. So I built a custom spreadsheet in Numbers to track all of my expenses on my phone in real time!

My spreadsheet has one row per day for all days that I'm away and has columns for accommodation, food, transport, activities, snacks, shopping, and other. A running total column tracks cumulative spend and will even convert currencies into Canadian dollars.

The whole thing takes seconds to update whenever we spend money. No surprises. No budget shock at the end. Just a clear picture of where your money is going.

We're heading to Switzerland this summer for 30 days so naturally I've created a Budget Tracker for our trip. I've attached a snippet of it...Would you use something like this?

Are you a planner or a wing-it traveller? 🤔

I personally think I'm a bit of both...I like to know my options and have ideas but see where the day takes us.

That said, this summer we're doing something that required months of planning — the Walker's Haute Route from Chamonix 🇫🇷 to Zermatt 🇨🇭. 180km. 14 stages. 10 mountain passes. 14 nights in alpine huts. And yes, every single hut had to be booked in advance (some by phone, some months ago, some the moment they opened for the season).

Before and after the trek we're spending two weeks exploring Switzerland — Rapperswil, Bern, Vevey, Geneva, the Jungfrau region, and Lucerne. Peak July tourist season means hotels go fast too.

So when people say "just wing it!"...sure, maybe in the off season. But for visits in peak summer? Every detail matters: which hut, which stage, which day, which train, on and on
