Seghill Level Crossing - Overnight Closure on Sat 27th July
We've been made aware that Network Rail's maintenance team will have an overnight closure of Seghill level crossing from 10pm on Saturday 27th July until 6am on Sunday 28th July.
Local diversions for road traffic will be signposted

To answer a common question about the :

'Why do trains not call at or ?'

The route of the Northumberland Coast Loop (in dotted orange) shows that the route would bypass both Ashington and Morpeth, with Ashington clearly being well away from the route on the other branch from Bedlington, with the Loop route going via Choppington and Hepscott.

Morpeth is a little less clear due to how closs by the route passes, but it actually uses a section of track called the Morpeth North Curve, which runs to the east of Coopies Lane industrial estate (behind Bristol Street Motors/Coca Cola plant), the line into Morpeth station itself is the one between Booker Wholesale and the housing estates as Stobhill.

Serving Morpeth and Ashington unfortunately can't happen directly simply due to their respective locations (the route can't take in Cramlington Station for the same reasons for example) BUT offers a great opportunity by being between these two towns, well connected by footpaths, cyclepaths and the 35 bus and a good opportunity to upgrade to ' ' by the simple addition of a car park for the station, which could potentially be located on land west of Pegswood Fire Station, using the A197 as a strong link yet again to Morpeth and Ashington, but also wider Northumberland via strategic location as the A197 links the A697, A1, A1068 and A189 together.

The Northumberland Coast Loop proposal hinges around the use of existing, open lines; the 'Butterwell Route' which seeks to link Ashington to Widdrington would require reopening the long disused line north of Ashington and a totally new section of line between Linton Colliery and the mainline.

Using the existing route via Bedlington and Pegswood has the advantsge of track already being in place, and reducing the need to lay new lines to bring services to 5 of the 6 Northumberland Line stations as planned to open in 2024, the loop wouldn't require any stations beyond this to make it work, and possibly only minor upgrades to the Pegswood-Bedlington route.
