BREAKING NEWS!

We've started to see the auks flying back to the island with fish in their beaks which can mean only one thing.....the chicks are hatching!
🐟🐠🐡🍤

We never see the chicks as they stay tucked away in the burrows or safely hidden on the ledges until they're ready to fledge, but it's super exciting to know that we have little pufflings up there!

As well as being monogamous, seabirds practice 'site fidelity' meaning that in around 4 years time the chicks will return to the island to start their own family ❤️ There is so much to love about these awesome animals!

The most well researched, factual piece of information that we all give out on board is that puffins are the size of a jacket potato 🥔

Seacoast Number 1 tip when looking for puffins:

👀 Keep a 360 degree lookout!

They pop up all around the boat and are constantly flying over head!

👏 Our crew are experts at finding them but sometimes they pop up when you least expect them and are gone before you know it!

That’s what’s wonderful (and sometimes frustrating 🤪) about working with wildlife ❤️

We’re mid way through the half term and what a week it’s been!

We’ve had puffins here, there and everywhere, gannets diving, seals banana-ing, porpoise feeding, auks rafting, our first feeding frenzy of the season (which means lots of fish! 🐠), PLUS, the jellies have arrived!! 🪼🪼🪼🪼🪼🪼

Our first feeding frenzy of the season! 🐟🐟🐟🐟

We counted atleast 10 bird species that had gathered to feed on fish that were just below the surface of the water!
