This striking ensemble was worn by Mail Guards who were charged with the safe keeping of the post as it was transported on the coaches. This particular design was introduced in the 1860s. Very different to what our postmen and women wear today!

Pop in to the museum to try on our own mail guard coat and see how you would far as a protector of the post 📬

Did you know that Prior Park and it's beautiful grounds was built in the 1740's for Ralph Allen; a key figure in the reformation of the British Postal System. He used his income from his new postal services to acquire the mines; This is where we get this honey-coloured stone seen throughout Bath Architecture.
As a National Trust site, it is perfect for a casual Sunday stroll whilst soaking up it's rich history and visiting our museum to find our more about the man himself.
