🇦🇺 “AM I TOO OLD TO MOVE TO AUSTRALIA?”

IT DEPENDS.

And that's an important answer.

One of the questions we regularly hear from people considering Australia is:

“I'M IN MY 40s — HAVE I LEFT IT TOO LATE?”

The mistake is assuming Australia has ONE age limit that applies to everybody.

It doesn't.

Different Australian visas have different eligibility requirements.

For the main points-tested skilled visas — including subclasses 189, 190 and 491 — applicants generally need to be UNDER 45 when they are invited to apply.

But that doesn't mean:

❌ Everyone over 45 is automatically unable to move to Australia.

And it certainly doesn't mean:

❌ “I'm 42, so I've got another three years to think about it.”

Why?

Because AGE is only one part of the picture.

Depending on the pathway, you may also need to consider:

👷 Your occupation

📋 Skills assessment

💼 Work experience

🗣️ English language ability

🎓 Qualifications

📍 State or regional opportunities

🤝 Employer sponsorship

👨‍👩‍👧 Your individual and family circumstances

And age can also affect the number of points you receive for a points-tested visa.

So perhaps the better question isn't:

“AM I TOO OLD?”

It's:

“WHAT OPTIONS COULD STILL BE AVAILABLE TO ME?”

That's a much more useful conversation.

🇦🇺 THINKING ABOUT A SKILLED VISA FOR AUSTRALIA?

HERE'S A DATE WORTH KNOWING.

Australia's Department of Home Affairs says the next invitation round for the Skilled Independent visa — subclass 189 — is expected to take place by:

📅 31 OCTOBER 2026

Why does that matter?

Because the 189 is one of Australia's points-tested skilled migration pathways.

And unlike an employer-sponsored visa, you don't need an Australian employer to sponsor you for the 189.

Instead, potential applicants submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect.

Your EOI includes information such as your:

👷 Occupation

🎂 Age

💼 Skilled work experience

🎓 Qualifications

🗣️ English language ability

📋 Skills assessment

These factors can contribute towards your points score.

But here's the really important bit...

65 POINTS DOES NOT MEAN YOU WILL RECEIVE AN INVITATION.

It's the minimum points threshold for the points-tested skilled visas, but actual invitation scores can be considerably higher and vary by occupation and invitation round.

In the last 189 invitation round on 4 June 2026, Australia issued 10,000 invitations.

And minimum invited scores varied substantially between occupations.

For example:

🔨 Carpenter — 65 points

🧱 Bricklayer — 65 points

🏗️ Construction Project Manager — 80 points

🎧 Audiologist — 75 points

📐 Architect — 85 points

So don't simply ask:

“DO I HAVE 65 POINTS?”

Ask:

“HOW COMPETITIVE COULD MY OCCUPATION AND POINTS SCORE BE?”

And if terms like:

SKILLSELECT

STATE NOMINATION
..leave you completely confused, you're definitely not alone.

That's exactly why talking to a migration professional before making major decisions can be so useful.
