Record Fee Paid To Beat Growing Panama Canal Congestion.
Falling water levels and rising demand are once again putting pressure on the Panama Canal, with congestion increasing and shipowners paying millions of dollars to secure faster transit.
A strengthening El Niño weather pattern is contributing to lower water levels in Gatun Lake, which supplies the canal’s lock system. At the same time, disruption linked to the Middle East conflict has altered global energy flows and increased demand for the waterway.
Daily auctions for priority transit slots have reportedly averaged around $1.1 million during August, compared with less than $100,000 during the same period last year. The owner of an empty liquefied petroleum gas tanker recently paid a record $4.6 million to secure passage from the Pacific to the Caribbean, while a container vessel owner is understood to have paid around $4 million.
