Come and join us at Twyford Wharf for a weeks cruise in August. Beginners welcome as full instruction is given, get away from the rat race, explore canal side pubs, see Engineering over 200 years old. It’s beautiful! And we are woof friendly!

After years of pointing out to C&RT that the Willows trees opposite Bankside in Banbury were overgrown and in a poor state one of the larger trees has finally fallen over across the canal.
It is a very sad reflection that C&RT have simply become a reactive force and are not proactive. Boats are now jammed up either side of the tree and no contractor has yet turned up today.

The offside vegetation has been growing out over the canal year on year and C&RT have not cleared the overgrowth, despite having bought it to their attention each year for at least the last 6!

Dear all,

We’re writing to share early information about a package of essential works planned at Aynho Weir Lock (Lock 33) on the Oxford Canal, scheduled for 2027. We recognise that any works affecting navigation are of particular concern to business boating customers, and we’d encourage you to read the attached information note in full, as it sets out the background, constraints, and reasoning behind the proposed approach.

The current proposal involves an in‑season navigation closure, with the following provisional dates:
30 March 2027 to 21 May 2027

During this period, Lock 33 would be closed to navigation and through passage would not be possible.

The works include full replacement of the 25‑year‑old lock gates, along with repairs to associated structures. The gates are now in poor condition and have reached the point where replacement is necessary to avoid the risk of unplanned failure and an emergency closure.

Given the lock’s location immediately adjacent to the River Cherwell, the proposed timing reflects the safest and most reliable window to undertake the works. This timing reduces flood risk and increases the likelihood of completing all works within a single, planned closure rather than through reactive interventions.

The attached information note provides further detail on:

the scope of works
the reasons for the proposed closure and timing
how impacts on navigation and businesses will be managed

While the works themselves need to proceed, we recognise the importance of understanding and responding to specific business impacts. We therefore welcome any feedback or points you wish to share within one month of this notification, to help inform ongoing planning and mitigation.

Full stoppage details will also be published via Canal & River Trust stoppage notices in due course.

If you have any questions about how this proposal may affect your operations, please contact the Business Boating team.

Thank you for taking the time to consider the information provided and engage with us on this.

Kind regards

Sarah Lee (she/her - why is this here?)
