The dimensions arrive with the enquiry.

Length looks fine.

Width looks fine.

Then you get to the height.

The machinery is 20cm too tall for the standard container. It's a small difference on a specification sheet. In freight terms, it can change the movement. Now we're not simply looking for a “bigger box”.

How will the machinery be lifted? Can it be loaded from above? Where are the lifting points? What does it weigh? How will it be secured? And what happens when it reaches the other end? Depending on the cargo, an open top might work.

A flat rack may need to be considered. In some cases, another solution may make more sense altogether.

This is why one of the first things we need when looking at non-standard cargo is surprisingly simple: Accurate dimensions.

Get those wrong at the quotation stage and you can be designing the wrong movement from the beginning.

Before October starts, check out these four things.

1. Cargo-ready dates
Are the goods genuinely packed, labelled, weighed, and available for collection?

2. Documentation
Do the commercial invoice, packing list, product details, values, and destination requirements all align?

3. Collection planning
Are the collection address, site contact, loading hours, access requirements, and cargo details confirmed?

4. Destination requirements
Have you checked the commodity code, customs process, and any country or product-specific documentation required for the route?

The best time to identify a gap is before a booking is confirmed.

Not when a collection vehicle is waiting. Not when a cut-off approaches. Not when cargo is already moving.

A short readiness check now can prevent a much longer operational problem later.

On-time delivery is rarely the result of a good decision.

It is usually the result of several decisions made properly, in the right order.

The cargo needs to be ready. The collection needs to be planned. The documentation needs to be matched. The freight booking needs to fit the delivery timeline. Customs and destination requirements need to be understood before they can become a problem.

When each part works in isolation, shipment can still become difficult.

When every part is coordinated, the movement becomes more controlled.

That is what sits behind reliable freight. Not simply securing a vehicle, a container, or space on an aircraft. It is connecting the stages before, during and after the journey, so that information, cargo, documents, and delivery expectations are aligned.

Another specialist project is underway for the Freight Agency team.

We are coordinating a series of movements to bring specialist equipment from Germany and the Netherlands into Fife, Scotland.

This stage of the project includes two heavy-duty roll-off units designed to separate water from sludge, mud and silt on construction and industrial sites. With collections across multiple European locations, specialist equipment requirements and a UK site delivery to coordinate, careful planning is essential at every stage.

This is one of three shipments being managed as part of the wider project, bringing equipment together from several collection points for delivery into the UK.

Direct service or transhipment. Which is better?

There isn't one correct answer.

Direct service usually means fewer handling points and can reduce the risk of delays.

A transhipment service may provide more sailing options, greater coverage and, in some cases, a more competitive freight rate.

The best routing depends on the shipment.

Urgent cargo may benefit from the predictability of a direct service.

Lower-priority cargo may achieve better value through a transhipment route.

The decision should consider more than the freight rate.

Reliability, customer expectations, inventory planning and destination requirements all matter.

Choosing a routing is a commercial decision, not simply a transport decision.

Why have I been charged vehicle waiting time?

This is one of the most common questions we receive.

A vehicle is usually booked with an agreed loading window.

If loading takes significantly longer than expected, the haulier may apply waiting time charges because the vehicle and driver can no longer complete the planned schedule.

Delays can happen for many reasons.

*The cargo may not be ready.

*Warehouse staff may be unavailable.

*Forklifts may be occupied.

*Paperwork may still be outstanding.

These situations affect more than one collection.

They often disrupt the driver's remaining deliveries for the day.

Good preparation before the vehicle arrives benefits everyone involved.

The quickest way to reduce waiting charges is to make sure the cargo is genuinely ready before booking collection.

FCL or LCL. Which should you choose?

It is one of the first questions many exporters ask.

The answer is not simply based on how much cargo you have.

Full Container Load, or FCL, gives your shipment exclusive use of the container. It generally offers better security, fewer handling points and more predictable transit because the cargo is not consolidated with other exporters' goods.

Less-than-Container Load (LCL) allows multiple exporters to share container space. It can be a cost-effective solution for smaller consignments, but additional handling and consolidation can increase overall transit time.

The right choice depends on the cargo value, shipment size, delivery deadline and how important predictability is to your customer.

Choosing purely on freight cost can sometimes become the most expensive decision if additional handling or delays affect your wider supply chain.

There is no universal answer.

The best option depends on the commercial objective of the shipment.
