Massive thankyou to local farmer Martin, of R.Rutherford & Sons TMC Ltd 🚜 who supplied us with a telehandler and operator, Gavin, to build our ballast store using the donated materials from Nexus.
Despite the difficulties farmers face at present, and entering a very busy time of year, they made time to help our community project, for which we are very grateful....cheers lads.....to quote Pink Floyd, its "another brick in the wall". πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ˜ƒ

Oh to be famous.....!πŸŽ₯
Some of you may have spotted us in the press recently.
This has come about due to one day last June when a team of volunteers from NEXUS and G&B Civil Engineering joined us for a day of track laying.
As an indirect result of this visit, NEXUS has donated and delivered surplus materials to us from the multi million pound project at Whitley Bay Metro Station.
Included in this was 50 tonnes of Concrete Barrier Blocks and a very large quantity of timber.
Some of this may have may have been destined for land fill, so Hats off
to NEXUS's sustainability ethics and commitment to the volunteer sector, and, for thinking of us !.
Stuart Clark, Infrastructure Director at NEXUS has stated his delight in "helping an exciting restoration project which has the potential to be a fantastic local tourist attraction".
David Punton, Communications Officer has helped put us on the map by releasing news of the donation.
We can certainly make good use of all these materials and it saves us a vast amount of money, which is always difficult to find in today's climate.
We recognise and appreciate all the hard work that would have gone into the logistics of making this donation happen.
This kind of commitment gives our volunteers a boost in the knowledge companies such as these are willing to help small community projects and support our goal of reviving the heritage railway here in Ashington.
Special thanks to Peter McDermott of NEXUS and Lewis Axon of
G & B Civil Engineering, and not forgetting Paul the wagon driver and fork lift operator.
Who knew Christimas happened in May 🎁 🀩

We were pleased to welcome a team of volunteers from Allianz UK who joined us for some track laying.
Despite the day being colder than an Eskimo's Outhouse, πŸ₯Ά the amount of craic and laughs made up for the abysmal temperature with some great progress made on a very tricky section of panels.
A great bunch of lads who worked like trojans.
Thanks for the help. πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

As the saying goes............... "Many hands make light work", and we had quite a few pairs visit this week to prove the point!. The willing 'Mitts' on this occasion belonged to Tutors and staff from Northumberland College.

Enjoying a pleasant spring day 🌞 they helped our own volunteers with track work and other tasks including trenching cable in, electrical work and most notably, beginning work at the farthest point of the track at the "Lakeside Halt" in preparation of a new Platform installation which is required to replace the very rickety one we inherited.

Big thanks to all who came and worked πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ ( we hope the blisters weren't too bad )😜.

πŸ₯ "Happy Easter" everyone πŸ₯

Latest update.......

As we enter the Spring months and longer days, progress is once again gathering momentum along the track. We will soon be welcoming back some of our volunteer groups too which is always a great help.
In the mean time, we must send our utmost gratitude to several organisations who have helped us during the past few months with either funding to purchase equipment or providing materials for the project. Special thanks to :
Bowmer Kirkland
Curry's ( Cramlington)
Billy Johnson Ziggie
Akzo Nobel
..... and an extra special thankyou to -

Croft Lodge - Blyth Masonic Order
who kindly presented us with a cheque at a presentation evening which required ditching the Hi Viz for best bib and tucker!!

Thank you all 😁😁😁

We’ve now installed our second pedestrian level crossing β€” another proper milestone for the line and a great chunk of progress to see.

Huge thanks to everyone who came along to help out. It’s true what they say β€” many hands make light work. The job flew on with all the graft put in.

Plenty of good banter, decent conversation, and skills being passed around as always. Days like this show what the railway’s really about β€” people mucking in together and getting things done.

We’d like to say a big thank you to RBB Group, a brilliant local company, for their continued support. They recently donated the use of a digger and driver for two full days to help remove old trackside ballast, ready for it to be replaced with new.

A special mention goes to Adam, who did a fantastic job on the digger β€” those two days of help have saved us months of work and mean we can move much more quickly into the next stage of the railway’s regeneration.

Support from local companies like RBB Group really helps keep our local heritage alive, and we’re incredibly grateful for their ongoing generosity.

Thanks to Ross for making it happen, and thanks again to everyone at RBB Group β€” we really appreciate the support!

A gift from 'The Discovery Museum, Newcastle' no less !!.......🎁

We were contacted by Jessica Cole, Curator at North East Museums offering us a piece of "Railwayana".
While this belonged to The Discovery Museum, it did not fit in with any of their displays so, they very kindly offered it to WNGR to ensure it was preserved as a working piece rather than end up as the usual planter somewhere, rotting....of course we were delighted to give it a home 🏠.

Its a bit of a mystery itemπŸ€”. The narrow gauge wheels and chassis were made in Sheffield in the mid 1920's and believed to have been used in the Durham coalfields. Enclosed within the truck is a moveable pulley system which we guess was to distribute rope??. Any pearls of information on just what this little truck would be used for, then we'd love to hear from you.
We are very grateful to be able to preserve this little piece of mining history here at Woodhorn Narrow Gauge Railway.πŸ˜ƒ

25/12/2025

We’d like to wish all our supporters, volunteers, visitors, and friends a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you for your continued support throughout the year β€” it truly means the world to us.

We hope you have a wonderful festive season filled with warmth, joy, and maybe even a little railway magic πŸš‚πŸŽ…
