Breaking News 🚨

The European Commission has published detailed guidance outlining the verification and accreditation framework for the CBAM definitive regime.

The guidance sets clear expectations for verifiers and national accreditation bodies, covering competence requirements, independence safeguards, and the overall verification process for embedded emissions data.

Key elements include:
📌 Verifiers must demonstrate technical competence, independence and impartiality.
📌 Lead auditors are required to rotate after five consecutive years on an installation, followed by a three-year cooling-off period.
📌 Third-country verifiers may apply through a single EU accreditation body rather than multiple national bodies.
📌 Verification reports must be issued through the CBAM Registry by an accredited and registered verifier.
📌 The verification process must meet a "reasonable assurance" standard for accuracy and consistency.

As no verifiers are formally accredited yet with first approvals expected around Autumn 2026 , this guidance will play a defining role in shaping the verification landscape for CBAM compliance going forward.

Businesses relying on actual emissions data should take the time to review this guidance closely.
