🦆 Meet the Duck – Week 6: Barry “The Mastermind” Duck
This week’s competitor isn’t just taking part in the Llandovery Duck Race — he’s one of the reasons it happens at all!
Meet Barry “The Mastermind” Duck, the yellow-feathered organiser behind the scenes, community champion, owner of Clean Rescue South Wales, and proud sponsor of this year’s £1,000 First Prize.
While hundreds of ducks will be floating down the River Bran on race day, Barry has spent months making sure every detail is in place. From planning and promotion to sponsorship and logistics, he’s the duck with the clipboard.
But don’t think that means he’s forgotten to train.
Barry’s race preparation includes:
📋 Inspecting the course for maximum duck-friendliness
📞 Coordinating sponsors, volunteers and race officials
🥕 Fuelled entirely by a vegetarian diet of carrots, peas and sweetcorn
🏃 Daily fitness paddles before work
🧠 Strategic race planning (although he insists he won’t give himself an advantage!)
🦆 Encouraging every duck, regardless of their chances
As owner of Red Dragon Cleaning & Restoration, Barry is known for helping people put things right when disaster strikes. Whether it’s flood recovery, deep cleaning or restoring order, he’s built a reputation for solving problems and getting things done.
When asked whether organising the race gives him an advantage, Barry laughed and replied:
“I’ve spent months planning this race. If I knew who was going to win, I’d have saved myself a lot of meetings!”
Fellow competitors describe Barry as organised, dedicated and impossible to catch when he’s carrying a clipboard.
They also point out that, despite being a proud vegetarian, he’s somehow managed to avoid being distracted by floating breadcrumbs throughout training season.
Will Barry’s planning and preparation pay off on race day?
Or will he be too busy making sure everyone else is having fun to notice he’s in the lead?
One thing is certain — without Barry, there wouldn’t be a race to win.
