Milford Sound vs. Doubtful Sound: which one belongs on your New Zealand itinerary? 🇳🇿🏔️🤔
The good news: you really can’t go wrong. But while these two fiords have a lot in common, they also offer very different experiences.
SIMILARITIES:
🏔️ Both are fiords located in Fiordland National Park
🚤 Both are best experienced as a full-day adventure where the journey is just as important as the destination
🦭 Both offer opportunities to spot wildlife, including seals, dolphins, and penguins
🌧️ Both get a LOT of rain. And rainy weather can actually make them even more spectacular, with waterfalls cascading down the cliffs and that iconic moody atmosphere
🚣 Both offer experiences beyond a traditional sightseeing cruise
DIFFERENCES:
📏 Doubtful Sound is bigger & more expansive, while Milford Sound feels more compact and dramatic
🚗 You can self-drive to Milford Sound, while Doubtful Sound requires an organized tour/transfer to get there
🚌 Getting there: Milford means a scenic drive along Milford Road; Doubtful involves a boat across Lake Manapouri + a coach over Wilmot Pass before you even reach the fiord
👥 Crowds: Milford is much more popular and generally busier; Doubtful’s more complicated journey means far fewer visitors
🚣 Extra experiences: Milford is fantastic for kayaking and scenic flights, while Doubtful is especially known for its remote, wilderness-focused experiences - including the popular overnight cruises
If I had to sum them up:
✨ Milford = iconic, compact & dramatic
🌿 Doubtful = vast, remote & wild
And if you have enough time in your New Zealand itinerary, I definitely recommend visiting both. They’re different enough that neither feels like a repeat.
