Young people across Aberdeen are being encouraged to have the adventure of a lifetime and apply to become sail trainees as part of this years' Tall Ships Races!

The sail trainee programme is recruiting 12 fully funded and 4 self-funded sail trainees to take part in this year's Races, sailing aboard the historic vessel Swan.

Young people aged 15-25 years who live within an AB postcode are eligible to apply, and no previous sailing experience is required.

Aberdeen has been recognised for contributions towards young people in sail training following the Tall Ships Races in July 2025.

The Host Port Trophy was awarded to the port that made it possible for the greatest number of young people to participate in the Tall Ships Races, with 244 joining as sail trainees from the north east through funding and trainee marketing schemes.

Aberdeen’s Keiran Side crowned as ‘most outstanding Tall Ships Races sail trainee in the world’

When Keiran Side signed up to be part of The Tall Ships Races Aberdeen 2025, little did he suspect he would be crowned “the most outstanding sail trainee in the world”.

But the 21-year-old from Aberdeen has won the prestigious Torbay Cup, awarded annually to the Sail Trainee who has demonstrated outstanding individual achievement and personal effort in a Tall Ships Race.

Keiran scooped the award ahead of 5,700 trainees from around the globe who took part in the 2025 Tall Ships Races, including 244 from Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.
