Beginning today and running until the 9th is the 36th Orkney International Science Festival. This year’s programme brings speakers from across the UK and overseas to Orkney, sharing news and stories from the many frontiers of exploration and discovery - from the depths of space to the interior of a cell, and into the mysteries of memory and imagination.

Hear about extraordinary journeys to mountain peaks and across polar ice, as well as explorations deep into Orkney’s past and glimpses of an uncertain future. Along the way, there are stories of remarkable inspiration - and, of course, music!

We would like to wish all those organising and attending the event all the best and hope they all have a fantastic time.

One of the world's longest-established and most original science festivals, providing a platform for fresh ideas in an island setting. The Festival dates are 3-9 September 2026.

The Orkney Rock Festival returns with performances from a line-up of local and visiting artists from the 3-6th of September. They will hold their biggest main event yet at Rapture Nightclub in Garden Square on Saturday 5th September with a second event on Sunday 6th!

This festival has quickly grown in popularity and presents a head-banging, foot-stomping, rip-roaring line up. Tickets are available here: https://wegottickets.com/ft/hCeVQBnfYf

We hope all the organisers, bands and everyone attending has a great time!

Huge thanks to all who joined us for the RNLI Cruise around Bressay and Noss on 'MV Hrossey' yesterday. It was great to see so many folk on board and we hope everyone enjoyed the day.

We would like to say Happy Birthday again to Caleb, whose 10th birthday it was yesterday - he is pictured with Captain Andy O'Brian, Stormy Stan, and two of the lifeboat crew Kal and Toyah.

A huge well done to the Lerwick Lifeboat Fundraising Crew and all involved for their fundraising efforts.

The RNLI receives no government funding and they rely on fundraising, donations and legacies to train and equip our volunteer crew. They couldn't save lives at sea without you - thanks for your support 🧡

Cuween Hill Chambered Cairn may appear as a simple grass-covered mound from a distance, but a short climb reveals something extraordinary - a 5,000-year-old Neolithic tomb hidden beneath the hillside.

Built around the same time as Skara Brae and Maeshowe, this quiet site overlooking Finstown and the Bay of Firth is every bit as fascinating, yet far fewer people are aware of it.

Have you ever ventured inside this remarkable tomb?
