It is a unique gateway to one of Europe’s most competitive economic regions and numerous tourist attractions in three countries. Situated on the borders of North West Switzerland, Alsace and South Baden, EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg is a unique gateway not only to the world but also to one of Europe’s most competitive economic regions and a wide variety of tourist attractions in three diffe
rent countries. The airport’s official name is Basel-Mulhouse Airport or EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg. Founded by a French-Swiss government treaty in 1949, it is the only binational airport in the world. EuroAirport has three main sectors of activity: passenger traffic with scheduled and charter flights, freight traffic including full freighter services, express freight and trucked air freight as well as industrial activities comprising maintenance and refurbishment of private aircraft carried out by highly specialized companies based at the airport site. Equipped with a main north-south runway of 3.9 kilometres, EuroAirport can be used by any type of aircraft. EuroAirport is served by scheduled airlines which offers direct flights to 80 destinations in more than 30 countries. Thanks to the strong presence of airlines that belong to the Star Alliance, oneworld or SkyTeam alliances, EuroAirport offers several intercontinental connections per day via the main European hubs (London, Paris, Frankfurt, Munich, Amsterdam, Brussels and Istanbul). At the end of 2019 around 6,400 people were employed on the EuroAirport site. Industrial activities accounted for more than 2,000 positions making up around one third of all direct jobs at EuroAirport. The freight sector accounted for over 1,000 jobs. The more than 3,000 remaining jobs are spread over passenger traffic operations, the authorities and other companies based at the airport site.
