What a journey these past few weeks have been for us! We called it Camino Zigzag as we hoped from one route to another🥾🇫🇷🇪🇸❤️💪☀️

We began hiking from Saint Jean Pied de Port to Irun on the French side of the Pyrenees. We hiked through endless green valleys, dramatic peaks, and charming mountain villages. Each trail offered something new—misty mornings, wildflowers, and sweeping views that made every climb worth it.

Along the way we shared the trails with majestic vultures circling overhead, curious cows blocking the paths, and even wild horses grazing freely in the high meadows.

And the food… wow. Every stop brought something to savor, but France completely stole the culinary show—every meal was a treat, from fresh breads and creamy cheeses to hearty mountain dishes that tasted like pure comfort after a long day’s hike. And there was the gravy… 🥖🧀.

From there, we crossed into Spain’s northern coast and walked from Irun to Castro - Urdiales (couple of days walk from Bilbao) where rugged cliffs meet the Atlantic and small fishing towns welcomed us with incredible seafood and ocean breezes.

Along the way, we also spent three days on the Camino Francés, walking from Grañón to beautiful Burgos. Almost desert like endless yellow fields with hot sun. ☀️

But the heart of this trip was the Camino San Salvador from Leon to Oviedo - a route unlike any other we’ve walked. Remote, quiet, and almost untouched, it felt like a hidden world of dense forests and breathtaking ridgelines. At times we went hours without seeing another soul, surrounded only by mountains, wildlife, and the sound of nature. 🌿⛰️

After finishing our final hike in Oviedo, we hopped on a bus to our beloved Santander, where we said our goodbyes to Spain with a ferry cruise across the bay to Somo—a perfect, peaceful farewell. ⛴️💙

Four weeks of hiking, exploring, and savoring the flavors of France and Spain—across icy dawns, blazing afternoons, unforgettable trails, and meals we’ll be dreaming of for months—have left us both grateful and inspired. This adventure will stay with us for a long, long time. ❤️❤️💪☀️💪❄️

🌄 Camino San Salvador – Day 3 🌄

Today was BRUTAL 😅 – long, steep climbs that felt never-ending… but WOW was it worth it. After one of the hardest days of hiking so far, we thought we were just booking a simple room for the night…

Turns out we accidentally booked an entire CASA 🏡✨ with our own private swimming pool 💦 … all for €80! 😍

From aching legs to pure bliss in one day. Camino magic is REAL. ❤️❤️

✨ Burgos on the Camino Francés ✨

Made it to the beautiful city of Burgos on my Camino! 🥾💛
Today’s highlight: visiting the magnificent Burgos Cathedral 🕍—a true Gothic masterpiece. Pilgrims get 50% off entry with a credential, which makes it even sweeter. 🙏✨
Feeling grateful for the history, the architecture, and this incredible journey. 🌿❤️☀️

After finishing the Camino del Norte in Castro- Urdiales we hopped on a bus to Grañón and spent three beautiful days walking to Burgos along the Camino Francés. 🥾✨
We’re not continuing on to Santiago this time—instead, we’re heading to León to start the Camino San Salvador.
Wish us luck for the next adventure! 💪❤️☀️

Sometimes plans have to change… we weren’t feeling our best, so we decided to continue on Camino Del Norte from Irun instead of heading south on Camino Basque. And today we took a break for a day in Bilbao. Not exactly a hardship—this city is one of our absolute favourites in Spain. From its beautiful mix of old and new, to the energy in the streets, and of course that cheesecake (the best anywhere, hands down 😋).

A little rest, a little cheesecake therapy, and we’re feeling so much better. Ready to lace up again and keep walking! 💪 🥾❤️

A Camino lesson learned a couple of days ago on a way from Bidarray to Espelette 🌞⛰️💪.

After a long lunch break, we ended up walking too late in the afternoon sun along the side of a hill. It got so hot that I was close to a heatstroke. Thankfully, my partner was with me and helped carry my backpack so I could finish safely ❤️

For anyone walking the Camino:
💧 Carry more water than you think you’ll need
🧢 Protect yourself from the sun (hat, sunscreen, light clothing)
⏰ Start early to avoid the peak heat
🥖 Take breaks in the shade and pace yourself
👣 Listen to your body—it’s not a race
🏘️ And most importantly: if you don’t feel well or think you can’t safely continue, it’s always better to ask for help in a town or village than risk getting stranded unwell in the middle of nowhere.

The Camino is beautiful, but the elements are real. Take care of yourself so you can enjoy every step. Buen Camino❤️

🥾 Today we walked 23 km on the Camino Nive-Bidassoa, leaving Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port and following the valleys of the Nive and Bidassoa. 🌿⛰️

The trail led us through quiet Basque villages and rolling hills, and now we’re resting in Bidarray — a charming stop before the journey continues.

It will take us 4 days to reach Irun, which is the official starting point of the Camino del Norte… but that’s not the path we’re taking. 😉

✨ Stay tuned to find out which other Caminos begin in Irun, and where our journey will lead next! 🇫🇷 🇪🇸 👣 🥾☀️😊

🌄 This morning we’re lacing up and getting ready to start our walk! From our gîte window we can see pilgrims already making their way, and we wish them a heartfelt Buen Camino 🙏✨.

We’re not heading in the same direction today, but our path is just as full of promise. 🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️

Follow along to see where we end up by the close of today’s hike! ☀️💪❤️

As I am reading today about Napoleon's route opening for the season it reminds me of my first Camino❤️

It was 13th September 2018 when I left St-Jean-Pied-de-Port and over a month later arrived in Santiago.

It was not an easy journey. Physically- my backpack weighed way too much and I was not in a great shape so the first day of 27 km through Pyrenees broke me. Mentally-I constantly doubted myself and the struggle in my head was as real as trying to force my body to walk day after day…

There were moments that I just wanted to quit but I decided to persevere and carried on. I kept telling myself that it's not long before it ends and I will never do it again. And when I met other pilgrims that walked several Caminos I asked myself "why would you want to do it more than once?!"

And then something happened. I think it was in Astorga when I told my Camino family "I am going to walk Portuguese in Spring". "You!?" -they said? "You don't like the Camino". Well, I guess, Camino likes me.

Since then I walked Portuguese, Norte (twice!), Primitivo, Ingles, Muxia, Lebaniego, Vadinense... and planing another one this September.

Camino calling is real! So if you are planning your first one be aware as it probably not be the only one!

And if you are on the Camino now and struggling- remember, you not the only one! It is hard! So be kind to yourself, take a day off, send the backpack with Correos for few days. Give your body and mind a break!
❤️Buen Camino❤️

Below is a post I wrote in 2018 after finishing my first Camino and few photos ☀️

I did it! Yesterday I made it to Santiago de Compostela after walking over 800 km from St-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France! It took me 34 days.

“first the camino breaks your body, then the camino breaks your mind, then after that they are at one with your soul and you are free".

Crossing Pyrenees and hiking over Navarra definitely broke my body, the Meseta desert made me crazy at times, Galicia gave me beautiful surroundings to appreciate and enjoyable walks. Do I feel at peace? I feel like I have never felt before, so maybe? I wish I had words to describe the experience. I am grateful for every day and for everyone I have met. It wasn’t always easy and yes! I have complained and asked myself “why am I doing this ”? But I persevered and learned that I am stronger than I ever imagined both physically and mentally!
