For the past few years, I’ve taken 1:1 birthday trips with each of our boys instead of throwing parties. Same budget. Bigger memories. 🥳

Instead of spending $1,500 on a 3-hour birthday party, we use points & miles to fly the kids somewhere of their choosing unforgettable (within reason: their faves are Disneyland, Disney World & San Diego). ✈️

💡 Beginner tip: Start with transferable points (Amex Membership Rewards. Chase Ultimate Rewards, Capital One Venture Miles) — even opening 1-2 cards can get you flights, hotels, and experiences you’d otherwise pay hundreds or thousands for.

Birthday trips > birthday parties. Every time.

Chase just launched a 40% transfer bonus to Virgin Atlantic, and it’s one of the best sweet spots right now.

With this bonus, you can:
• Fly to London in economy for ~5,000 points
• Book premium economy from ~8,000 points
• Fly lie-flat across the Atlantic from ~21,000 points

You can also use Virgin Atlantic points to book Delta flights — sometimes for fewer points than SkyMiles, and often in main cabin instead of basic.

⚠️ Pro tip: Always check award availability before transferring points. Once you transfer, they’re stuck.

Some things in our marriage just go unsaid… but when it comes to points & miles, we have 4 non-negotiable rules:

1️⃣ He NEVER adds me as an authorized user
Some issuers—Chase in particular—count authorized users toward your “cards opened in 24 months.” Push past 5 and you could lose a big welcome bonus. Call to fix it? Sure… but who has time for that?

2️⃣ He NEVER books his own hotels
I maximize the value of every trip using portals like Rakuten & Rove. He knows I’m the expert now—he tells me the dates & location, I handle the rest. He carries luggage; I carry points. Different strengths, same team.

3️⃣ He NEVER opens store cards
Store cards = low value, high opportunity cost. They can block bigger signup bonuses on flexible, transferable points cards and count against your 5/24. Don’t fall for it.

4️⃣ He NEVER uses his debit card
Debit cards earn zero points or miles. Using one is literally leaving free trips on the table. We only touch it as a last resort. Every spend should work for your travel dreams.

Everyone asks how our kids have already been to Paris multiple times.
We don’t spend more — we spend smarter.

My husband and I rotate opening credit cards that earn transferable points (Amex, Chase, Citi, Capital One). We refer each other for bonuses, transfer points to airline and hotel partners, and turn everyday spending into flights to Europe.

No, we’re not rich.
No, it doesn’t ruin your credit.

And yes… Target is still my second home — this just happens to beat discounted candles.

Delta just released a nationwide SkyMiles flash sale with roundtrip flights to Europe starting at 26,000 SkyMiles.

If you have a Delta credit card, the 15% TakeOff discount can reduce some routes to around 22,000 SkyMiles roundtrip.

The sale ends February 5 and requires some date flexibility. Availability has been showing for destinations including Paris, London, Dublin, Amsterdam, Barcelona, and Marrakech.

This deal was flagged by Thrifty Traveler, an award alert service I’ve used for years to track SkyMiles and points deals as soon as they’re released.

Southwest just dropped a limited-time Promotional Companion Pass, and this is a great way to try it without earning the full pass ✈️

Here’s how it works:
✔️ Register in your Southwest app (takes ~30 seconds)
✔️ Book one roundtrip or two one-way flights by Thursday, February 5th
✔️ You must travel by March 31st

Complete those steps and you will earn a Promotional Companion Pass that lets a companion fly FREE with you on unlimited flights August 10–October 7, 2026 — even on award tickets. You can also change your companion up to 3 times, just like the real pass.

Perfect if you’re still booking spring break travel or can cancel and rebook an existing Southwest flight with flight credits.

Quick points & miles lesson 👇

If you’ve ever wondered whether using points is actually a good deal, this is the simple math I use every time.

Cents per point (CPP) formula:
(Cash price − taxes & fees) ÷ points used × 100

Real example:
💵 Cash price: $654
✈️ Points booking: 30,000 points + $6

(654 − 6) ÷ 30,000 × 100 = 2.16 CPP 🔥

How to read it:
• Under 1 CPP → usually not worth it
• 1–1.5 CPP → average
• 2+ CPP → great value

CPP is a guideline, not a rule. The best redemption is the one that saves you real money and fits your life.

Family lounge access with Venture X is gone… but this is how we’re replacing it 👇

It starts with a Chase Bonvoy card — and right now the Bonvoy Boundless has an elevated offer of 5 FREE nights, which makes this a really good time to consider it.

If you’ve had any Chase Bonvoy card for at least a year, you can upgrade to the Ritz-Carlton card and unlock Priority Pass lounge access for your whole family — even though the card isn’t open to new applicants.

Listen, I LOVE Disney World, so this feels a little blasphemous, but…

Disney tickets in the U.S. are getting OUT of hand 😬

🎟️ USA: ~$110–$160 per day
🏰 Tokyo Disneyland: ~$55–$70 per day

So yes… we went to Tokyo Disneyland instead ✈️🇯🇵

When you use points & miles for flights and hotels, the entire trip can cost less than a U.S. Disney vacation.

Cheaper tickets, incredible rides (yes—I cried happy tears on the Beauty & the Beast ride), phenomenal theming— and still 100% Disney magic ✨
