🇫🇷 The story behind Mont-Saint-Michel

More than 1,300 years ago, according to legend, the Archangel Michael appeared in a dream to Aubert, Bishop of Avranches, and asked him to build a sanctuary on a rocky island rising from the sea.

At first, Aubert ignored the dream.

Michael returned.

And then returned again.

Eventually, in the year 708, a sanctuary was founded on the rock that would become Mont-Saint-Michel.

Over the centuries, monks, pilgrims, kings and soldiers passed through this extraordinary place. A magnificent medieval abbey grew above the tiny village, seemingly suspended between the sea and the sky.

And then there are the tides.

At certain moments, the sea surrounds the Mont and transforms it once again into an island, just as it appeared to medieval pilgrims approaching it centuries ago.

It is one of those places where France doesn’t simply show you its history.

You can almost feel it.
