21 years ago, I sat on a bench in a small Vosges village called Chaumousey with three newfound acquaintances. Nilaya is moored in front of us.

Little was I to know, that over the intervening years, Stef, Bud, and Josef (to my left) would all go on to become friends, but more importantly ’Crew’.

Beloved by different guests at different times, they all have a special place in my heart.

Bud sadly passed away from cancer far too young, Stef became Isabelle and my ‘Best man’ at our wedding in 2013, and Josef, the environmental forest protecting Canadian eco warrior he is today.

Paths cross, lives change as a result and the effect of each and every such encounter changes the world’s future just a little bit. In my case, a lot!

That little wooden bench, like all the people on it, were huge components of my Nilaya adventure and I thank and love you all for the parts you played. Isabelle of course, the best and finest encounter ❤️

Sometimes, when you do something every day, you forget how special it may feel to others.

Our old barge, built in 1922, was once simply our home before it became a place we could share with guests from around the world. Year after year, we have tried to make it warmer, more comfortable, more welcoming. Not just as a hotel, but as a little world floating through the French countryside.

Reading your messages, your comments, and the emails some of you send us years later, we realise that what we share goes far beyond a cruise. Thank you for sharing our love of canals, good food, slow travel, beautiful landscapes, laughter around the table, and life aboard this old lady of a barge.

You often thank us for the experience… but truly, we should also thank you. For your curiosity, your kindness, your stories, and for becoming part of ours, even for just one week.

Amazing cruise between Nancy and Chaumousey high in the southern Vosges this week. Over 65 locks, two aqueducts over the mighty River Moselle and super shady cruising given crazy temperatures for May!

A wonderful visit to the secret Chateau de Haroue, a seldom but stunning historical pile, plus the empty Port d’Épinal, the very place I made home, during my year long conversion of Nilaya 20 years ago. A stunning Vosges city with a big heart! ❤️

We hope to cruise this route just once later this season Ron Pilling and it’ll be with you and Pat. The problem here is that the water from the Moselle source runs out quick if there’s a drought! Fingers crossed.

In late 18th-century Lorraine, the Niderviller manufactory became famous for porcelain. This bouquet de fleurs, sculpted entirely by hand, was created for Delphine, daughter of the factory’s owner — a fragile treasure balancing technical virtuosity and personal affection.

More than decorative art, it is a frozen bouquet: a symbol of elegance, craftsmanship, and the Enlightenment fascination with capturing nature in eternal form.

Our 2026 season kicks off today. With just one unfilled cabin remaining, it’s going to be a busy one too!

The barge is looking perfect after four weeks hard work painting and getting her ready and tomorrow we set sail with four excited guests.

Enjoying a few beautiful spring like days at our wonderfully cosy home in rural most France before heading back to Nilaya mid next week.

We’ve a busy month to get her ship shape and Bristol fashion and so looking forward to our penultimate seasons barge cruising.

Look out Alsace, Lorraine and Burgundy. Here we come… 😃

Final winter holiday almost over and as you can see, we’re both super excited to get back to France and our beautiful barge Nilaya. Ecuador makes my 93rd visited country and we hopefully both have many more future trips to do.

Nilaya almost fully booked this summer with only May 9th and 16th still available. If you fancy a last minute cruise with 25% off, do get in touch. The savings will probably pay for your air tickets!

11 hours in the air ahead and more than a few glasses of champagne in the planning! After all it’s my 63rd birthday on Monday! Cheers!
