Qaqi Mai: Bike Share welcomes the recent announcement by Fiji Government, through Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau , introducing $𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘃𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗶𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘀.

This is an important step for Fiji.

For a long time, bicycle lanes were there, but not always respected. Now, the Government is making it clear that these lanes are 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀, and they must be kept clear.

The Minister also raised two key points:

☑ The 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁 of enforcement when officers have to respond and tow vehicles
☑ The role of the 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗠𝗦 code 582 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀

This shows that keeping bicycle lanes clear is not only Government work, it is something 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝘂𝘀 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀

When a vehicle blocks a bicycle lane:

✔ Cyclists are forced onto the main road
✔ That puts them in danger
✔ Many people will stop riding because they feel unsafe

So this rule is not just about fines.
It is about 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝘁:

Every time someone blocks a lane:
✔ Officers must come
✔ Time is used
✔ Sometimes vehicles must be towed

This means extra cost on the system.

𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿
Government has asked the public to report through SMS. Qaqi Mai supports this. But we are also asking people to go one step further.

This is not about attacking people.

The organisation stresses that this is not about shaming individuals, but about helping more people understand that bicycle lanes are meant to be kept clear.

“𝐼𝑛 𝐹𝑖𝑗𝑖, 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒 ℎ𝑎𝑝𝑝𝑒𝑛𝑠 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑝𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒 𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑟𝑡 𝑠𝑒𝑒𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑖𝑡 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡𝑎𝑙𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑎𝑏𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑖𝑡,” the statement said.

Qaqi Mai believes that enforcement alone will not be enough. Education and awareness must grow at the same time, as many people are still learning what bicycle lanes are for and why they matter.

The organisation says the country is now starting to see the pieces come together, policy discussions, real use of bicycles on the ground, and now enforcement to support it.

Qaqi Mai reiterated its support for the Government’s direction and called for continued cooperation between authorities and the public to build a safer and more practical transport system for the country.

Qaqi Mai: Bike Share is Fiji’s first homegrown bike share initiative, working to reduce traffic, save fuel, and provide simple, affordable transport options for everyday people.

𝗤𝗔𝗤𝗜 𝗠𝗔𝗜 𝗦𝗘𝗟𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗘𝗗 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗙𝗜𝗝𝗜 𝗜𝗡𝗡𝗢𝗩𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗔𝗧𝗢𝗥

Qaqi Mai: Bike Share has been selected into the 𝑭𝒊𝒋𝒊 𝑰𝒏𝒏𝒐𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑨𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒐𝒓 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 – 𝑪𝒐𝒉𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝟏, under the 𝑺𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒅 𝑪𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒔, a national programme that brings together Government, financial institutions and innovators to work on real solutions for Fiji.

The selection places Qaqi Mai among a small group of businesses recognised not only for innovation, but for addressing wider system challenges, including transport, cost of living and sustainability.

For many Fijians, traffic congestion, rising fuel costs and limited short-distance transport options are becoming part of daily life. Simple trips, from home to the bus stop, from the bus stop to work, or moving around town, are becoming more difficult, expensive and time-consuming.

Qaqi Mai has been working over the past seven years to demonstrate that bicycles can play a practical role in solving these everyday problems. With bikes already operating at 𝑴𝒚 𝑺𝒖𝒗𝒂 𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒌, the concept is no longer theoretical, but something people are already using on the ground.

Participation in the Activator programme now creates an opportunity to take this further. It allows direct engagement with Government agencies and financial institutions, while also opening the door to test solutions through the 𝑹𝒆𝒈𝒖𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚 𝑺𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒃𝒐𝒙- a controlled space where new ideas can be trialled even if current laws are outdated.

This is particularly relevant as Fiji continues to operate under older frameworks such as the 𝑩𝒊𝒄𝒚𝒄𝒍𝒆 𝑨𝒄𝒕, which does not fully account for modern developments like e-bikes and shared mobility systems.

Through this programme, Qaqi Mai aims to contribute to ongoing discussions on how transport systems can evolve to better meet current needs — especially in addressing traffic congestion, reducing reliance on fuel and improving access for everyday users.

The programme will commence from 𝟐𝟖–𝟑𝟎 𝑨𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒍 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒆 𝑩𝒂𝒏𝒌 𝒐𝒇 𝑭𝒊𝒋𝒊, marking the beginning of a structured engagement between innovators and national stakeholders.

As Fiji continues to face increasing pressure on its transport systems, initiatives such as this highlight the growing importance of practical, affordable and sustainable alternatives in shaping the country’s future.

Vodafone Fiji has officially announced the rollout of 5G connectivity across selected areas in the country, 𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑙𝑢𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑘𝑒𝑦 𝑧𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑠 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛 𝑆𝑢𝑣𝑎.

While this may be widely understood as an upgrade in internet speed, it represents something much more significant for the future of transportation in Fiji.

𝟓𝑮 𝒆𝒏𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆𝒔:
• Faster data transmission
• Lower latency (near real-time response)
• Greater capacity for connected devices

These are critical foundations for modern, technology-enabled transport systems.

• Real-time fleet monitoring

The introduction of 5G strengthens the infrastructure required for these systems to operate efficiently and reliably, particularly in high-demand urban environments.

The areas identified for initial 5G coverage in Suva align closely with zones of high mobility demand, reinforcing the viability of connected micro mobility solutions such as Qaqi Mai.

This development signals a broader shift toward digitally integrated transport ecosystems in Fiji, where infrastructure is no longer limited to physical roads, but extends into network connectivity and smart systems.
