Helium Is the New Hydrogen!
Meriaura has long invested in the use of alternative fuels in its fleet, and in recent years the company has succeeded in increasing the share of bio-oil in the fuel it uses. Other options have also been continuously explored, and it now appears that a new, viable alternative has been found. In March, Meriaura’s deck cargo vessel Meri tested a new solution that can significantly reduce CO₂ emissions from maritime transport. This invention, based on “balloonium” technology, takes advantage of the lift generated by helium balloons, which raises the vessel above the water’s surface for brief periods. Despite air resistance, fuel consumption is reduced.
“This is a very interesting option," says Meriaura’s CEO Beppe Rosin. "The balloons also really nicely mark our company’s 40th Anniversary year”.
The only problem with helium is its limited availability and high price. However, Meriaura has found indications that helium could be produced as a by-product of biogas. If this scenario becomes reality, the Finnish helium business could, so to speak, really fly.
Meri’s next helium test run is today, as it glides past Ruissalo at five o’clock in the afternoon. Meriaura will set up a viewing spot in Kansanpuisto and serve coffee and balloon pastries to eager spotters.
